Fun Fact: In 1.0 Snurbles cast cure and protect on players passing by. The feels you get when you are killing his buddy and he cast cure on you then protect, or it cast cure and protect on you after you de-aggo it.I'm actually with you there (unless you stare into their cold dead eyes). I'm thinking snurbles are considered voidsent because no one actually knows how they came to be or what they are really. They're so tame compared to other creatures classified as voidsent and kind of cute. The introduction of "zhe puff puff" got me thinking that some might keep them as pets.

I've often wondered what some of the backstories look like. I read a few early 2.0ers rp pages. I recall after playing through 1.0 and before 2.0 I had made Roland a rather elaborate back story about coming down from a series of small villages in the Western mountains of Xelphatol, leading into him travelling into Gridania the first time in 1572 6thAE.When RPing, people generally generate their own backstories and don't follow the main storyline (else we'd have a lot of boring copycats). Most do have some "class" so to speak (Sigurd is a thaumaturge who dabbles in arcanism) but I come across rpers who play just ordinary joes, like miners and gatherers and a handful of fishermen. It's funny though that you mention fear of the Ossuary as more pcs are afraid of Pearl Lane than the Ossuary. Even so, you bring up a very valid point. And you are correct, Sigurd would ignore those people and bury himself in his research for days on end instead.
It was less about creating an active portrayal of anything and more about crafting a starting point continuity in my head. The Deus Ex of "The Warriors of Light Mythos," made it easy to explain away why no one remembers his, or anyone's origins.
When planning an event, or after a big success for my FC or some major change I usually write a story about the characters of my FC starting up the event, the "hows" and the "whys." It creates a bit of flavor, but plays into my love of the lore.
Curious that PC RPs don't like the Pearl Lane, the only thing that frightens me there is that vile, floating mystery bottle... gadz that thing gives me the creeps.

Pearl lane is basically the dark back alley of Ul'dah. If someone's going to backstab you, you can bet it's there.
Half the fun of RP is creating that backstory, wondering where your character lived and how events of the storyline affected your character or not at all. I've run into a few characters from other continents, but most tend to pick from Eorzea simply because it fits and you have information about it. It really leads to a huge variety of and depth to characters. Sigurd himself is actually from Highbridge, and the Calamity drove him from his home (think Burning Wall), driving him to do something better with his life and the magic he'd been given.
This is pretty much the Wiki where RPers write out their stories or write their own character-generated book (I'm working on Sigurd's right now).
There's such a funny story about this. I've run into so many characters who all agree, and these aren't people who talk to each other. It's just something known. I picked up on rp chars talking about Pearl Lane a few months after 2.0 came out and even new people who came in after that in 2.1 and probably in 2.2. Any character who's been to Ul'dah simply knows it's a terrible place. I haven't found any evidence of this from npcs, but pcs have done all sorts of things there: dealt drugs, gotten mugged, even strangled a few hookers.
Limsa has a similar idea that everyone complains about the taxes.

Actually if you look around at Pearl Lane you'll notice that it's basically a lot of Ala Mhigan refugees who act like thugs in there, and the initial MSQ that takes place there definitely tells you it's The Back Alley
I feel bad about roasting these little critters now.
It's been so long since I've seen the introduction. I wasn't sure where I wanted to rp my character from at first so I probably missed that information.
