What's the gear progression here? What do I do now? What do I do to unlock access to the things I need to do? Is crafting worthy for endgame or is it just farming?

There are beast tribe quests to take for darklight armor that can only be bought with allagan pieces in revenant toll Mor dhona.
One is in little solace just before the sylph lands in east shroud.
Second set is the amjaal camp by the ruins outside little almigho south thanalan.
If you've done that already well there are always other classes... Crafting is really just something to do if you get tired or burnt out with the main story progression.
Its more helpful to other people who haven't crafted enough to be able to meld materia onto their gear yet.

....Are you in a linkshell or free company...? Try making some in game friends who can direct you the proper way... In your lodestone profile you appear to be part of the Free Company, "Legends of Folklore." Try asking for some direction in there...I mean wow, you have 129 members in there. SOMEONE is bound to be willing to help you. If you feel comfortable speaking up in these dangerous forums, you should be able to ask for help there lol.
Also, judging by your Lodestone profile, you have your Marauder at level 8. Level that up more to get some cross class abilities to use on your Paladin to make yourself even better.
To start getting involved with the Binding Coil of Bahamut, you need better gear. Invest in Heavy Darklight armor (That's the tank version) and deck yourself out in all that. After that, start your "A Relic Reborn" quest to start working on your relic weapon. Once you have THAT...You can do a bunch of runs of some hard mode dungeons to collect some mythology pieces to start getting yourself an upgraded version of your Artifact (AF) gear. People refer to this gear as your AF+1, or Mythology gear, because you use Tomes of Mythology to purchase it. Once you have some of that gear, you can be effective in The Binding Coils, where you earn Allagan accessories and gear. That's some of the "best in slot" gear, which means it's the best gear you can currently get. Patch 2.2 changes that, though. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't get it, since you will most likely need the gear that is currently regarded as "the best" in order to be effective in getting the even better allagan gear being introduced in patch 2.2 in the Second Coil of Bahamut.
Once you have some Allagan gear you can also work on Extreme primal fights which will earn you so bad ass accessories with high item levels.
That'll definitely hold you over until 2.2, in fact you'll probably still be working on that long after 2.2 is released.

Just a heads up if you're planning to grab Darklight Gear:
The Philosophy Tomestones are going to be gone in 2.2 (you'll be able to trade them for Mythology tomes). And the Darklight gear is going to be relegated to Level 50 dungeon drops.
So I'd suggest hitting the daily Low Level and Main Scenario Roulettes each day (it'll net you 400 tomes of Philosophy a day) and possibly farming places like Wanderer's Palace and Amdapor Keep (each will give you 100 Philosophy tomes as well as some Mythology tomes) so you can get some of that gear before it goes to just being dungeon drops (because then it'll be random what drops.)
The body and legs pieces are the most expensive (1320 tomes each), but the body piece includes the helmet and the leg piece includes the boots.
I would probably farm tome caps to full and wait for the patch. Most likely you will get better stuff with ur tomes then.
Have you finished the main story yet? If not, work on that.
The "goal" is to work your way up to Hard Mode Primals (HM Ifrit, etc), Crystal Tower (CT), Extreme Mode Primals (EX Garuda, etc), and the Binding Coil Of Bahamut (BCoB, Coil, or T1-5).
Once you have finished your level 45 and 50 class quests (do those first) then the "proper" path is to start doing runs of Wanderer's Palace (WP), Amdapor Keep (AK), Haukke Manor HM, Thornmarch (unlocked by following after-story quests) and whatever new level 50 dungeons they introduce to get armor drops. Those dungeons will give you armor pieces of ilvl 55-65.
You can also start working on the "A Relic Reborn" quest as mentioned above. You will start by fighting Chimera, then Hydra, then HM Ifrit, HM Garuda, and finally HM Titan. You need an average gear level of 57 to even try fighting Titan. You don't get armor from the HM primals but you can get weapon drops. After you beat HM Titan you can get your relic weapon (and shield) which are ilvl 80.
The side goal to doing all those dungeons, and the reason for doing the daily roulettes, is to get tomes. Philosophy tomes are going out but there are still myth tomes and soldiery tomes are being added. Philosophy tomes currently let you buy ilvl 70 armor. Myth tomes let you buy ilvl 90 armor. Soldiery tomes will be for something higher than 90.
If you have a lot of gil or ARM 50 and a smaller amount of gil, you can skip the level 50 dungeon raids and make/buy the darksteel armor and accessories from the market board. Those are all ilvl 70.
Once you have gotten your average item level up a bit (arguments vary to the exact number) you can start with Crystal Tower. This drops ilvl 80 armor but you can only pick up one piece a week.
Once your average item level is up to 70 or a bit above you can start trying Coil. The difficulty of each turn ramps up a lot and you can only run each turn once a week (this is changing), so don't expect to plow through them all at once.
Thanks.
So far I have quests to unlock/have unlock all the pre-2.2 content. How do I unlock the new 2.2 Hard dungeons? I see the Quests required when googling, but no information on how to get those quests.
Once you finish the Praetorium and get to watch all of the credits basically look for quests in Mor Dhona, Vesper Bay, and the Waking Sands itself. They all start from those locations.
The preliminary patch notes for 2.2 are up on the Lodestone now: http://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodest...a2f50fd428c5c2
That should tell you how to unlock the 2.2 Hard Mode dungeons, which you'll be able to do once the patch comes out on Thursday. Both NPCs for Brayflox (Hard) and Halatali (Hard) will be located in Revenant's Toll, Mor Dhona
