In regards to your sign image, it's a shop in Japan, they don't HAVE to serve tourists and likely don't want to due to language barriers. Amazing what a problem language can be. As for the quoted, you're right. It's not just a right, it's an inalienable right. We are ALL free to pursue our own identities in our own ways to our own ends and noone can take that away from us. People have gone to jail, or worse, for trying to infringe on this inalienable right. Now, there IS a line in how far this can be defended. If, in the pursuit of your identity, you try to PHYSICALLY involve others who do not want a part of it then you are in the wrong as you are then infringing on THEIR inalienable right. This is the ONLY time you can do anything about it. You speak of tolerance yet say, "Personal identity is not a right." Where's this tolerance you speak of, then?

Seems the most consistent thing to do would be to make the dresses for both and be done with it.

If you don't want to wear it, fine, don't wear it. God forbid they inject more choices into this game.
Along those lines, next we should have a Battlestar Galactica tie-in and all be given raptor mounts. Making gender meaningless in this game doesn't make sense - you have a choice to roll whatever character you want. You're stuck with its limitations. Lala's are short and can't see anything. Rogs are massive and block your view all the time. Female cats sit nicely and don't squat like male cats. Deal with it. Don't like it, role a different character, no one is stopping you.

    Hmmmm.

I feel like no matter what I say I will get yelled at here but I'll bite. Japanese video games usually depict very effeminate males being the strong protagonist. Final Fantasy is a perfect example. Yoshitaka Amano is famous for depicting the male characters as having very effeminate features, with a few exceptions of course. In lieu of that, I've grown to like the look of effeminate male characters in games as a hero role. Granted, I've never been very muscular irl, so that may contribute to my opinion. My BRD is incredibly effeminate, which I like, and I chose fairly soft features for my character which accentuates that, but some of my other roles are not so much.

That being said, I feel that a dress would look more ridiculous and silly than actually attractive aesthetically. For BRD, it works because the forms and shapes go well with the male forms we have in game. A dress like this, I have a hard time imagining this working for the models we have.

On the other hand, the game already has its fair share of eyesores already, so I guess it wouldn't really matter. I'm trying to avoid the social politics of this while sharing my opinion, I'm speaking purely from an aesthetic standpoint. There are many options for males to make your character look effeminate as it is, same goes for masculine females. Adding something like this would be up to the devs to either say "This looks too silly," or "We can make this work," to look pleasing to the eye.

You're right. It's who you are and how you live. Which again, is no different than a culture that disagrees with sensationalizing homosexuality. That's who they are and how they live. Calling them close minded, bigots, homophobes, etc is no different than them calling you derogatory names. Or are you saying that they should change who they are? All I'm saying is, right and wrong is very much a perspective thing when it comes to ways of life.

My issue is not about what gender people are. It about making everything bland.... imagine if every whm dresses like Paladin? all chainmail and heavy metals etc... and Paladin wear gear like Blackmage...

Hey its fantasy, they should not lock jobs with AFs and job specific looks, i want my Monk to look like Behemoth! make it happen SE.

"freedom to wear ANYTHING" at the cost of game quality?

I don't know about you i like my game diverse, not anything for everybody. This game is already bland as hell, every player and their class look like each other, now lets mix male and female clothing, so it becomes unrecognizable to see what it is by looking at it..

We can play guess what sex that character is!

He? o.o.... um She is.. Heshe?

My only point against the implementation of this is that, after looking at some character faces, none of you could pull off a convincing trap.

It has always baffled me how people think that insulting, misrepresenting and shaming others will somehow win them over rather than garner resentment and further divide.

Glad to see some folks being reasonable and grown up about the issue though. Amazing what we can do when we look for common ground rather than reasons to scream and point fingers at each other.

I really don't see what "game quality" is lost by letting people dress their characters how they want. If anything, it improves the quality of the game by giving us more freedom of expression so that we can better make use of a game system.

Yes I like the idea of hairstyles having no gender lock but I understand there is extra work required with the textures. I do like a lot of the female hairstyles and would like to see cross over.

I also support the idea of unlocking gender locks on clothing for the Glamor system as well as other items. I would love to see Sarongs added to the game for both genders in a summer time event.

@Synapse if you need to know the gender of some one's character and you cannot distinguish from armor alone, you can always ask them. I get that on many occasions with my character being mistaken for a female Miqo'te. Each person's individual perception of what an ideal gameplay style is, can be different and I think that is fine. If gender becomes a feature that actively effects battle stats, that would be something that would require knowing, like in pvp or roleplay but even then it can be fixed by indicating it within the stats you can check on your opponent.
