Possible ways to make this take longer:
Requires several items bought with new tomes, thus taking weeks to finish do to caps
Requires some tokens from a weekly quest
Requires a crafted weapon with over melds.
Requires random drops from new coil taking weeks to finish due to lockouts
Requires random drops from dungeons.
Requires daily items from daily quests which you must do daily to finish.
Requires a certain amount of EX primal kills.
By which point you'll probably have a better weapon from T9.

Honestly, I don't see any harm in having an ueber-item available with a ridiculous time commitment - as long as the time commitment is ridiculous enough that no sane player would expect striving for such a weapon to be the norm. FFXI Relic weapons used to be that way in the early years of Dynamis. Yes, there were folks with the time and commitment to get them, but you certainly were not considered a bad player for not having one.Success wouldn't be nearly as much a concern as the posts on this thread. What these posters seem to want is something that a HIGH number of players--80-90% would be my guess--would see as nigh impossible to complete (think 30,000 Alexandrites), all in the name of lording their "accomplishment" over everyone on their server. Wanting content that excludes such a number of people simply for the enjoyment of seeing others not have what you have is about as close to obsession as I can think of.
FFXI Mythic weapons maintain that status even today. "N00b where ur mythic??? No mythic = boot!" may be joked, but never spoken in earnest.
There are endless threads by folks whining about there being nothing to do, nothing to grind for. Give them a grind of this magnitude, and maybe it will quiet them for a while.
I for one am one of those folks complaining about there being nothing to do, I leveled the few classes I wanted to 50, got all my crafting to 50, enjoyed selling 2 stars on the markets in the early days, got my 10 clears of coil achievement, got 6 or 7 ex primal weapons around the 6th or 7th week they had been released. I need something to hold my attention in between patches. I need something to race other players for, something that takes time and dedication. Something that when a player gets before me, I stare stary eyed until I get my own.
I really like the idea, I wonder if the quest will change depending on the guardian deity you picked ( since they are twelve, they could pretty much be the Zodiak in this game, unless they use the FFXII symbols )
Although I doubt I'll be tied to either Coil or Extremes as it's the 3rd and alternate route like our current relic.
And customizable stats sounds great! I wonder if you can choose a specific bonus to an attack like CD reduction or Effect enhancement. That will finally bring some customization to this game!
Pharos and the new HM dungeons probably will get the DL gear ( but HOPEFULLY not from the Ruins of Amdapor! )

I just hope that the new Zodiak weapons have some staying power if they are hard to obtain. Not people are getting them 2 weeks before 2.25 hits, now something better drops from New Primal Ex.

A long term goal like a legendary weapon is exactly what I've wanted.
Ridiculous grinding, unreasonable objectives and excruciatingly time consuming. I want something that not everyone is expected to get for many weeks and can be slowly worked towards in-between DF queues.
It doesn't even have to be powerful but I'd like for it to have really awesome visual special effects like the GW2 legendary: Sunrise Greatsword(GW2 Legendary)
I just hope the Zodiac weapon upgrade quest doesn't require the new tomes in very high quantities. The relic to relic zenith upgrade was completely compulsory, easy, cheap, and forgettable. The only drawback was that you had to put off upgrading your armor to upgrade your weapon. I don't mind them using some of the new tomes that way, but leaning on it exclusively would be very annoying. Hopefully they come up with something interesting this time around, and ideally their sentiment that not many people will complete it by 2.25 doesn't indicate that you have to get through turns 6-9 or anything (I don't mind that as a later upgrade, but they seemed to indicate it will be upgraded multiple times before 2.3).
