I asked the same question of the awesome devs at xivdb.com a couple of months ago and PV said:
"We have actually made a lot of progress in that area, if we could only get a connection to each servers market-board without having a character logged in, it would be complete."
API is what is called an Application Program Interface. In essence what it means is that if there are services configured to allow sharing of data, an API key can be issued to allow external programs and even websites to access that data. This is how EVE Online enables players to track and interface with their character data from mobile apps and websites etc. It makes it possible to access certain data in a controlled manner without going to extreme measures like hacking into the server, because that would be bad.
For the Auction house to be searchable on a website, SE have to make that data sharable, then release API codes to allow people to access it. Neither have been done yet.
