Actually, no, I guess it wouldn't. World firsts ceased to matter about half way through the last decade.
World first never mattered, at least to people with more important goals, which is basically anything in real life. If something, the only credit given should be to the pioneers that discover the core strategy to defeat an encounter. If you already know what to do, does it matter if you beat it 24 hours or 5 days after it came out? It's not like the difficulty was lower the longer it took to beat it.

In the days before test servers world firsts mattered in so much as the uber guilds would essentially be open-world testers. They'd post huge threads about encounter design lambasting the developers and demanding tweaks to enable the content to be beatable (while closely guarding their strategies) and after subsequent tweaks by the devs they'd lord it over the lesser guilds claiming they, and only they, beat the pre-nerf content and that everyone else should be grateful for their intervention in enabling the rest of the peasants to be able to play the game.

Google Furor and Tigole for examples of this.

I agree with the general sentiment of your post however.

I dunno. They matter in the same sense that any other competition matters - that is, it is what you make of it. To the people who strive for world and server firsts, it certainly matters.

Oh yea, agreed. What I'm trying to say I guess is that it's a really silly thing if you analyze it. And it's gone beyond dungeons and NM kills. The other day I saw a "world first" drake mount obtained in Reddit... I'm all for self-achievement, but most of the times these things just come off as a desperate cry for attention.
