You aren't going to find many supporters of FFXI's abominable rendition of a Red Mage. As much as I hate most of FFXI, RDM stands out in the pack as a fantastic design failure from every perspective. The only places it ever found use were unintended.
lol cuz players just wanted it to be just another dd class (Not suprising) when FFXI made it support. Most rdms that I knew that played the job loved it.
Lol people loved it because it could also solo some very nasty stuff, in party setups it was a broken record on "refresh" casting, my girlfriend simply stopped partying the job completely and soloed bosses or duod it with me.^^
You're just simplifying it. Slow/para/dia/bio/magic burst/heal/sleep/refresh/gravity/convert/chainspell/etc. Way more to do than most roles in FFXIV. Of course this is all Pre Abyssea don't know what happened after. Like I've said there's a reason why most mmos are just mainly everyone playing DDs because to them support is boring.

One need look no further than Dynagrind linkshells for many relic gears that were utterly useless to players who built gear sets and played jobs completely outside the nature of SE's original plan for them.

Unintended? Some, fun? Definitely. Was Nin tanking fun? yup. More than PLD in FFXIV? By a mile. It's not a bad thing to be unintended. I think some players made Nin/blm work that was awesome.
Was that other guy kidding? RDM was the only other class other than BST that solo Tough Mobs. RDM was one of the most OP classes and balance designed in FFXI. If it became a all out DPS then it would become a DRG (support healer lol) T_T.
RDM will ALWAYS be very polarizing to people. Some like the support stuff (buffs enfeebs)
some like the back up curing abilities, some like that it can do so much, some like the idea
of melee and magic.
No matter what they do, people will be unhappy because of how many different things rdm
can and has done in the past. not to mention personal opinions and attachment to ideas.
This might explain then I suppose why no party went afield without one prior to the Wings of the goddess expansion, and why everyone hated depending on them only to be told they were also out soloing mobs that wiped entire balanced parties.
I played xi for almost 9 years.
