    As far as I am concerned, I would be pretty disappointed if SE just re-used some parts of another FF's mythology for their 'main-story' just because they like re-using stuff...
    While XIV screwed a lot of FF references for the sake of making this a standard MMORPG, they kept some:

    FF3 - Crystal Tower/Labyrinth of the Ancients still remain as a portal to ancients, along with Land of Eureka coming. You can't get any more similar than direct import of concept.
    FF6 - The current Magitek Reapers are used on the frontline assault more than the Vanguard (Version 1.x) and Juggernaut (1.x) - In FFVI, they too were the frontline Magitek unit (same design too.)
    FF11 - Ignoring Shantotto, Titan is also a protector more so than just a god that wants to wreck things. Shiva is said to have her own kingdom in XIV, much like the Shiva in FFXI, also linked to the Gigas coincidentally.

    There's more lore relations to many of the FFs than just XII, a lot of us joked that the world of Hydaleyn or w/e is Vana'diel in the future, which isn't too unplausible since Atomos in XI can devour realities and 'choose' which is the real reality, in XIV, he is also a temporal being.

    Meh, I had also said some things about it back in days, but people said it was just a lack of imagination on SE's part (Damalsca as an example, is quoted during 2.0 storyline. And it's a recurring city in the world of Ivalice..)

    I have a wild idea.

    What if it isn't Ivalice, the Nova Crystalis worlds, or the world of light and dark. What if instead, this is an intermediary plane of existence? Think about it:

    So far we've had two dimensional travelers really: Shantotto and Lightning (correct me if I'm wrong). We also have heavy thematic elements from other games (Crystal Tower, Gold Saucer soon too) and also primals and monsters, not to mention the jobs themselves.

    Could it be instead that Eorzea is in a central location to the other Final Fantasy Worlds, being influenced to a point where it manifests objects and such from these worlds? Hence why we have all these things from other games together in one place and why our two dimensional traveling ladies ended up here for a spot.

    Hydaelyn is not an intermediary world (that would be the Dissidia setting), but more like FFIX's Gaia which as well as having it's own unique ideas, also includes many intentional references, in jokes and call-backs to past FF titles. Yoshi-P stated ages ago he's a huge fan of the earlier FF titles (FFVII is actually his favourite, apparently), and he wants ARR to be a fond call back to all the games that came before it. That doesn't mean Hyadelyn is such-and-such a world from another specific FF title though, as it isn't. It just uses references to other FF games in a more ironic or subtle way.

    And as for Lightning and Shantotto's recent crossover appearances in ARR, considering both characters already can travel across dimensions in their own respective games, it's little wonder they both ended up in Hydaelyn - the game itself didn't even need an explanation for how they found themselves here, they just were.

    Based on lighting returns ending wouldn't it be safer to assume that lightings world was the 1st final fantasy and that everything else is the result of her actions?

    You know? I always thought of FFXIV as a online upgraded version of FFXII... Was my favorite FF game, I played it so many times...

    When making my character for first time in FFXIV... I remembered the opening song of FFXII, it was so awesome... When I think of FFXIV as a upgraded-online version of FFXII I think it didn't disappoint me yet.

    (For example I disliked FFXIII because the battle system was like a 'back' in history to FFX-2's system instead of using FFXII system that was really lovely, without changing scenes for combat, just fighting in the world while exploring)

    In my opinion they should add more things from XII to XIV, but of course, there would appear those who always say "It has nothing to be with this game, this is XIV, not XII, It has no sense, It's not the same lore..." and I don't want to start a discussion about it, just to say my personal opinion... XIV felt like playing an online upgraded version of XII

    FF1-FF10 = 100% Sqauresoft,

    FF11 = 75% Sqauresoft and 25% Sqaure Enix.

    FF12 = 20% Squaresoft and 80% Sqaure Enix.

    FF13 - FF14 - 100% Square Enix.

    OFF TOPIC:

    You guys are only like 7 months too late.
    This information was on the lore section of the forum for ages.

    Yes, I'm being a lore hipster.

    ON TOPIC:

    I personally love the Ivalice lore of both Final Fantasy Tactics (advance) and Final Fantasy XII.

    This reminds me a lot of Stephen King's Dark Tower series. I still have suspicions that the Crystal Tower could perhaps have a similar function as the Dark Tower, in that it holds worlds together and creates interconnectivity.
