Short sighted. Once player numbers drop below a certain line, the addition of new content and improvements to the existing one will simply be no more "worth it". So I understand why some people want to know the numbers - nobody wants to be the last rat on a sinking ship.

That said, the current time is definitely not the best to release player numbers, because some of those who are on the fences now but do not log in would not be covered.
So again, how does this affect your current enjoyment of the game? Do you need something to be popular to like it?
