Said MMOs also have no use for their jump feature other than just being able to jump. I guarantee you people don't play MMOs because you can jump. Step into reality.
I've explored those islands. There's nothing there and you know it. Oh wow a building....
....you can't even enter it.
Things like this are said when people can't think of something better to say. Get over it, it's called realization. There's zero use for any of this features at the present time and you know it.you are an apologist.
or you choose to ignore it to try and have an argument.
fak jumping, the end.
The point is, yoshida says he doesnt see the use for the feature, tanaka said the use for the feature when he showed teh video.Said MMOs also have no use for their jump feature other than just being able to jump. I guarantee you people don't play MMOs because you can jump. Step into reality.

Ships would be used to travel to company owned areas, and for pvp purposes, that also tells you the use for a cannon. Use for a large cake, in the context of companies, is giving your guild food. Use for being able to group craft, is so that you can make cool things for a group, and hopefully have a alternate means of leveling that is group based, and uses team mechanics.
When yoshida said he didnt think it had use, he was saying, i dont think that player companies are important, and the content that player companies can do serve no purpose.
He looks at purpose in this game as, does it give me Equipment or skills for battle. everyone doesnt share that view.
You build a boat to go places, they have places to go, they could put stuff there, or make you build on the islands, as in you actually build your own guildhall, or get others to. Why? because some people like to do that stuff.
A guild doesnt need to be made for battle. Maybe the reason we havent had any ls fixes in 8 months is because Yoshida doesnt think linkshell management, and guild activities serve any purpose. In fact it is consistent with scrapping companies (until people started bitching about what happened to player companies)
Hamlet defense I always pegged to be like Campaign style, where the invaders would have to have some kind of outpost because they can invade the town. That would have been pretty fun.
@OP:
Reading over it, yeah I can see how it could be misleading or "troubling", but when you really look at FFXIV, there is no practical use for building a ship, when even ferry system is still poorly implemented.
Someone mentioned a collection of small islands -- I've seen those videos and they aren't even fully rendered nor are there any events (interactivity) on said islands, so clearly Yoshida is referring to the current build of the game where it would have no purpose which anyone who denies this is the real apologist as it was thrown out in this thread. Food wise, Yoshi-P mentioned when the battle system is being tweaked and overhauled food is going to be changed, as seen here:

Honestly folks; Yoshida is looking at the big picture where players tend to look at the small picture.Q. To that end, are there any plans on changing how food is consumed? Right now the effects are unknown and the community is confused as to how to use food.
A. Yoshida-san is aware of the problem and wants to address it, but admitted that the priority right now is the battle system. He indicated that he needs to proceed in this order because, for example, if they were to address food effects to make it so that food was being consumed for every battle right now, once the battle system changes, it might end up not being necessary or helpful. Yoshida-san feels the need to adjust the battle system first since it is the cornerstone of the game. He can then can address how food, for example, will play a part in the battle.
you guys make no sense. The islands are there, FROM RELEASE OF THE GAME. this means 9 MONTHS AGO. yoshidas job is to DEVELOP CONTENT. of course a ship serves no purpose with content that was released 9 months ago, and probably created 12 months or more ago. he was supposed to actually add the content.Hamlet defense I always pegged to be like Campaign style, where the invaders would have to have some kind of outpost because they can invade the town. That would have been pretty fun.

Are yall really saying that because the content is not completely implented as the game stood 9 months ago, that it should not be implemented?
this is circular reasoning
I will not make new content because i dont have new content already developed.
I will not finish developing content that was previously developed because the content is not finished developmentally.
how can you make any new content if the reason you dont make new content is because the game currently doesnt have that content.
why make a ship, if you have no where to go, why make new places to go if you dont have a ship, why design new structures on new places to go, if you cant go to the new places you didnt design, because you dont have a ship.
Are you people really that fooled by marketing double talk?
build the ship
build the islands
build content that happens on the way to the islands.
build the content that happens on the islands
that is your job as a developer.
Stop taking 4 months to figure out what you are supposed to do when it is obvious.
9 Months ago and the videos I seen were posted in the last 2-3 months, and still has no content to them. It's not I who makes no sense, it's you who are failing to understand that Yoshida's words are about the current game, not what can and will come.
It is obvious, you're just so hell bent on believing they don't know what to do when the opposite is infact true -- they know what to do, there's just no use for it currently. It is not this hard to understand. Are you people really that fooled by marketing double talk?

I realise that Yoshi's talking about the present, but please realise that he's the one in charge of FFXIV's future too.Why would we use a boat to traverse over said bodies of water with no where to go to that isn't already taken care of automatically? (tl;dr - Serves no purpose currently.)
Cannons are made to break what defenses and to protect what and why? (tl;dr - Serves no purpose currently.)
Cakes are food. Yoshida said food is being redone in light of battle system changes. (tl;dr - serves no purpose currently.)
He's speaking of the current game, not the future.
All that mentioning of "the cake" made me chuckle
