Tank from 11 going to 14 tanking

I know there is a lot in difference in tanking from game to game. Do I need to really mark every mob so the party can see what to attack? I know back in the day during die alot to let the others know what mob your going after. I'm thinking it's kind of the same here?

I'm also wondering if cure works just like in 11 for hate. Does it give more hate or do the mobs just ignore me when I cast it. I know I'm gonna get hate mail for casting cure as tank all I need to know does it help with hate, or should I just ignore trying to cure myself?

    Any help would be nice

The only instance where Cure would be good for building hate is during Ultima story mode (Praetorium). Because nobody can deal damage, you can't build hate and a simple Cure from the healer would tear starting hate off you. So spamming Cure on yourself would help (You gain more enmity from Overcuring then healing hurt HP.) Other then that Cure is fairly lackluster, but Stoneskin helps a considerable amount if you use it before a bit hit while the healers are occupied

As for marking mobs, you'll get overzealous DPS who will attack anything under the sun. Marking will at least make it so they're at fault for not attacking the mobs in the right order (Unless you mark them in the wrong order)

It does generate hate but since Pld/gla mind are so low and Mrd being even lower it won't generate much and it would get to a point where cure isn't really worth casting later on in dungeons. So low level dungeons, would help a litte but later on, not worth it.

For the most part, forget everything you know about tanking in 11, aside from having the target (or more commonly targets) facing you 24/7, minus a few circumstances. Magic/healing no longer produces your emnity, skills which mention it on their tooltips do. as GLA before 26 though, your life might be rough. 26 gets you the third step in your base combo, Fast > savage > Halone. From that point on in multi pulls, open with a shield lob to close the distance, flash once or twice, emnity chain, flash to keep blind up, tab to another target emnity chain, rinse repeat. Fight goes on for a whole? use riot blade chain to recover enough mp to keep flashing like no tomorrow. And as mentioned, marking mobs beyond the main target (1) isn't really needed. If dps can't count to 1, they need to rethink alot more than their gaming experience.

your MP is better off being spent on flash at lower levels. since cure sucks for GLA/PLD

    1. Always mark, takes like 2s and everyone will appreciate it - especially in low lvl dungeons.

    2. Cure from PLD does build a tiny bit of hate, but not nearly as much as a WHM Cure. It's also significantly weaker (I've maxed out at roughly 250, 300 crit) so it's only really worth using if it's all you've got. If you end up enjoying PLD, I'd suggest getting CNJ/WHM up to 34 for Stoneskin. It's waaaay better than Cure and provides useful mitigation when you have no cooldowns up. It's also great for OTing - you can throw SS on the MT or anyone else that needs it while the healers are preoccupied with Cure bombing.

You don't need to mark every mob. I find it sufficient to simply mark a single mob - that is, the one I am currently generating the most threat on, with a '1' icon, then switch it as I focus on the next.

The 1 icon occupies a single slot on my hotbar and is easy to use. No need to have extra menus up or spend more than a moment marking the primary target.

Cure is totally useless as a PLD. At 50 I cure for a little over 200HP out of a pool of 6,000, and it takes a disproportionately large amount of MP to cast it. You will be using shield oath, flash, circle of scorn, and your Rage of Halone combo to get and hold enmity.
As for marking: you don't HAVE to mark mobs. I mark if there are people in the party that are VERY green, but anyone with a modicum of experience will be able to follow your attacks just fine on their own. You can also just mark one target as that which is the current focus rather than marking all numerically. Just make sure that you use Flash a lot. It is your means of holding hate on more than one enemy. Since I started WHM, I've noticed that flash doesn't get used as much as it perhaps should. If you don't have a lot of AoE damage flying around, you can rotate between mobs to keep hate on all of them.
Very important: beside each name (the the left) of a party member there is a small gauge that measures your enmity and that of the party so you can cycle through the mobs and throw an attack at something that you might lose control of soon. There is an icon beside the monster's name too; green circle (full attention elsewhere), yellow triangle (starting to consider you), orange triangle (getting mad at you), red square (seeking to end you). All monsters should have red squares, if one does not then redirect your efforts to it until that square is red. Also, Provoke is an emergency damage control measure now (use it with shield lob), and isn't part of your rotation like in XI.

Tanks in 11 were DPS jobs

As states provoke is totally different and more useful in 14. That took me awhile to get used to after 10 years on 11.

A single mark is generally enough I took WAR to 50 with a built in X mark as part of my tomahawk macro. Told the DPS to follow the X. Once you hit 50 nobody really marks anything.

I find PLD much more interesting in 14 but I do miss the brokenness of gear swaps, aegis and Ochain of 11.

Cure is useful for solo play pre-lvl 50. When you want to start on a fate boss, and are waiting for people to join you/heal you, Stoneskin and Cure help a lot. Seeing as how you probably dont have stoneskin, Cure will then be useful. Otherwise, no point in really using it.

Mark your targets to make everyones job easier. Even just a "1" mark helps, as damage will be focused, and other enemies can be crowd controlled. Post lvl 50, you will rarely need to mark. Exception: Thornmarch
