I would imagine they would give a free copy of the PS4 copy if they drop it.
Or...they will get mobbed even in Japan.

Nice I give money, they cut service for what was promised years ago. Why even bother?
Thanks for the responses y'all. Eases my mind a bit. I was really upset yesterday and contemplated not playing until a fix happened. Hopefully you are correct alhandra, and this is the issue being hotfixed.

I'm glad to know they're already planning on dropping PS3 support, even if it is in the distant future. The limitations it imposes really show.
Good. With this we have a chance to see some content that's not hold back because it has to run on almost 10years old technology.

Glad they won't allow the game to gimp along dragging oudated ps3 technology behind it like they did with ffxi and ps2 for the longest time.

Air Battles confirmed ^^For example, if we were to have a large-scale FATE where players can ride on a flying mount and freely fly around and swoop down at a dragon that is 200 meters long, players would probably be impressed and entertained. However, it would also require us to raise the minimum requirement when it comes to hardware specs.
If enough PS3 players switch to PS4
You can switch from PS3 version to PS4 version for free (with losing the PS3 version)

This is actually not true. They dropped US PS2 support - but they did NOT drop EU and JP PS2 support. This meant that the game was still being held back by PS2 technology.
So, essentially, they made a decision that pissed off all the PC Master Race folks who wanted the game to upgrade to suit new hardware, and it pissed off all the US PS2 players who now could not access the expansion.
I do not expect FFXIV to ever drop PS3 completely - though the "free upgrade to PS4" offer might indicate that they actually learned from the mistake on FFXI and are actually considering dropping PS3 (and not just giving the idea lip service to keep customers that might otherwise jump ship).
MIGHT.
I am definitely certain they will drop PS3 support. It's not a matter of "if", it's a matter of "when."
What I feel they will do is take a look at the PS3 version of the game, then take a look at the number of primarily PS3 subscriptions after the 3.0 expansion. If the number still favors a majority of PS3 users, they will support it another 6 or so months, then check the number again. The process will repeat as long as needed until the number favors PS4/PC players. As soon as the number favors PS4/PC, they will set a hard date to when they will stop support for the PS3, but will also offer incentives to jump ship and play on PS4 or PC instead for those who are still being stubborn.
The PS3 is impressive for what it can do with a 256 MB GPU, but it's an antiquated system in comparison with the PS4 or any general mid-range priced PC. It will hold the game back far worse than the PS2 holding FFXI back (FFXI was designed for the PS2 originally; the problems stem from maximum allotted harddrive space, which SE had to petition to Sony to increase every single time). I think a lot of PS3 players who have PS4 will see this in a few hours. The jump from PS3 to PS4 is pretty massive.
