Unless you are a completionist, no. It is not necessary.
While making unique recipes will give you a decent exp boost it is my personal opinion is that it's more headache with all the things you'd need to hold and get just for the sake of making those items.

and... If I can gather okayish with my DoL until level 50 despite not using crafted HQ items with them.
I leveled all three of my DoL classes using only the gear they gave to me through the class quests and didn't even bother with accessoires until the later levels where I made more use of my GP in some of the leves, at level 50 I did go for the HQ sets though.
But for leveling up DoL NQ gear suits just fine!

For crafting on the other hand you will want to invest in HQ gear. (It'll pay back in the form of materia later as well.)

So, a few of my own thoughts on the matter: First off, the main advantage from leveling up a craft is, funnily enough, convenience. With DoL/DoH leveled up to 50 you won't be reliant on the market boards to get items you want, and this can help you when the item just plain isn't listed (Like when filling in gaps where dungeons didn't drop loot, or assembling a full set of matching armor) or if the item is drastically overpriced (Like, say, any item soon after it comes out).

As for advice leveling, you may want to check out the GamerEscape wiki at http://ffxiv.gamerescape.com/wiki/Main_Page . You can use it to see what recipes a given item is used for, as well as how to obtain it. Using this, you can easily figure out if you should hold onto an item (You may use it soon, or it's difficult to re-obtain) or sell it.

You may also want to check out the list of all the levequests at http://ffxiv.gamerescape.com/wiki/Category:Tradecraft_Levequest . The link listed before seems to have a preference for leves where you can turn in the required items up to 3 times. While that DOES give the most xp per leve, it requires you to craft 3 items instead of one per turn in (or 5 instead of 3 in the case of recipes that make 3 per synth), and each turn in gives LESS xp than a standard leve which only requires you to craft a single item. So, it's a trade-off between what you value more: Your leve allowances, or the cost of materials and the time spent gathering them and/or crafting the many items.

Pre 2.1 I would have advised the tripple turn-in leves (Charity leves), but with the changes they made boosting the exp for the single turn ins and lowering the reward for turning in HQ's (from +200% to +100%) I personally don't think the tripple turn-ins are worth the hassle anymore unless you have enough gil to just buy the items.

Tripple turn-ins undeniably still give the most experience points per leve (moreso if you craft every single item yourself) but the thing is that you have to make 3 or 5 items per delivery and those quests consist of 3 deliveries each.
Yes, you'd need to make 9 or even 15 items per leve to complete one of them, which means the exp you get per item paired with the time you need making these items makes Charity the least practical and least efficient of crafting leves in my opinion.

I prefer doing the "Ingenuity" Leves, these leves give the most experience per item and they don't give that much less than a Full HQ "Charity" turn in.
The only (in my opinion very minor) inconvenience they pose is that they require you to travel back and forth between zones to pick up a new quest between turn ins.

The very simple answer from me is "Yes"

Simply because it will eventually have some worth. Right now it doesn't because of what Yoshi and team are trying to combat.

Also crafted/melded Gear is much better than dungeon gear (In most cases).

If you craft high level items and convert them into materia there is a possibility that you may turn some good profit. j

Other than that I find it fun/frustrating/exhilarating

But I hope you do craft and keep that inventory messy and cluttered because if its not...your doing it wrong

I am a winner, even though I sometimes fail.

Thanks everyone for keep giving me good information!

Urthdigger, I just checked that webpage (http://ffxiv.gamerescape.com/wiki/Main_Page). It is awesome! So I just put in search an item I just collected and it display a lot of information about the item and in which recipes it is used... Whoever that made that webpage should have our respect after all, surely not an easy task to do that ^^.

As for the leves and the allowances... Yes, I think I might keep doing it the one-item levecrafts. I have around 50 allowances (And I used a few with the culinarian...) If I don't have enough I just go fighting to dungeons awaiting for it. My best way to take the max profit of the allowances is only giving HQ items for obtaining doble exp-guiles.

I've leveled crafters to be as self-sufficient as I can. (make my own food, not bug others to do materia melds for me)

It's kinda tough to make a profit on some of the crafts, but you just have to be observant about what is listed, what's not, and how often things sell. I made pretty decent money HQing mid level leatherworking items, but I tend to stay away from high level crafts just because the markets are saturated.

That website used to be known as Eorzeapedia. And... well, check my sig. I'm not the ONLY one who works on it, but there's a reason I push it so much :P

The game is new so lots more changes are needing to be done and I believe it will be. In short you have yourself a glorified materia melder but like I said the right new recipes and a viable way to get the materials will do wonders for the economy.
