Oh look, Wikipedia.
"Massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) mixes the genres of role-playing video games and massively multiplayer online games, possibly in the form of web browser-based games, in which a very large number of players interact with one another within a virtual world."

I'll just leave that here.I'll just leave that here.Originally Posted by wikipedia
A massively multiplayer online game (also called MMO and MMOG) is a multiplayer video game which is capable of supporting large numbers of players simultaneously. By necessity, they are played on the Internet.[1] Many games have at least one persistent world, however others just have large numbers of players competing at once in one form or another without any lasting effect to the world at all. These games can be found for most network-capable platforms, including the personal computer, video game console, or smartphones and other mobile devices.
MMOGs can enable players to cooperate and compete with each other on a large scale, and sometimes to interact meaningfully with people around the world. They include a variety of gameplay types, representing many video game genres.

To those who say "go play a single player game", how many good RPGs are even released nowadays? Especially JRPGs. There are usually only a couple released each year. For those of us that grew up with Final Fantasy and the RPG genre as the most popular in gaming we have been abandonded. So in order to get our RPG fix we have had no choice but to start playing MMOs.
I really dont want to make a ton of friends and socialize, I just need my level grinding, loot hording RPG fix. If there were more RPGs being released like they used to I probably would never even bother playing an MMO. But unfortunately I have no choice. The "cool kids" took over my hobby and all thats released now is shooters so you're stuck with us solo players in your MMOs now.
1) Are you seriously using Wikipedia as a source to prove a point? You are already not worth listening to and no one should take you seriously.
2) MMOG or MMORPG, it doesn't really matter. The fact is that it means "Massive Multiplayer". If you want solo content so bad why play an MM game at all? MMOs that have an ability to solo everything (or most) do not last long. Look at GW2. Everything is soloable except for dungeons with some of those being needed for the main story quest. Then you spam dungeons to get cool lookn gears (only for looks though cause you can get most stat combinations by crafting now). So really you have to group 7 times as there are 7 dungeons and everything other than that is solo. The game has lost most of its player base and the only reason it is still going on is because ANET pumps out new events almost every month. But even then the people who still play it are bored and only play it because they feel some kind of responsibility to. However, on the flip side games like FFXI who made you form parties for everything lasted for 6-7ish years before they saw a massive decrease in player population and only switched to solo content BECAUSE of the decreased population. They also did not see a surge back to the game after that solo content.
What I am trying to say is that maybe MMOs (RPG or not) simply are not for the OP.
3) One more time, seriously never quote Wikipedia if you want to be taken seriously in life.

@Maku, maybe you should read more than just last few postings...

Also Wikipedia is considered a valid source by the academic community these days. This isn't the 90s I haven't heard the "omg WIKIPEDIA!?!??!" response since middle school.

I have; and I still do. And as an instructor of university-level material I advise my students I will not accept WP as a primary source for their research. And I check.
I shudder just picturing/considering what kind of superficial idiot of an academic would allow anyone to use WP as a primary source on any serious subject.
I agree anyone who uses WP as a *primary* source for making their point, only proves they are no longer worth listening to, at least for that particular subject.
It is a nice starting point to look for *valid* cite-able sources; that's as far as it goes.
Cheers!

Forgotten about this but let me reply. All you did was define what the genre was, not that it wasn't a genre. Your comment was 100% pointless and didn't add a single thing.
Also here is the definition.
gen·re
ˈZHänrə/
noun
noun: genre; plural noun: genres
1.
a category of artistic composition, as in music or literature, characterized by similarities in form, style, or subject matter.

The reason I play an MMO has little to do with grouping up all the time. It has everything to do with playing a game that uses a monthly fee to invest into making new content and expansions.
Playing alongside other people is just a nice plus that shouldn't be imperative.

Variety is good in any game. If I am waiting for a DF/PF group as a dps it could take some time. Nothing wrong with having some solo/duoable type stuff. I miss NMs badly. Nothing like attempting a NM, not sure if it could be done solo or not, but just taking a shot at it. I hated the grind-fest that FFXI was, but it had much more variety in content. I miss the exploration, FFXIV is just an open world lobby for other content.
