It's this sort of low production value auxiliary pseudocontent that is defining square enix products more and more. It is in-line with Yoichi Wada's vision of SE, which focuses on mobile phone apps, microtransactions, and production value corner cutting. It's NASA's better cheaper faster mantra, only just cheaper.

The World Ends With You is a text adventure with a battle engine, and is the new Square Enix model for quality and cost control.

The point of Square merging with Enix was to keep production value high so quality of gameplay doesn't slip like this. And yet the merger has apparently failed to do this now that a good portion of our videogaming from them is pretend roleplaying and imagination.

Why don't we just all go back to 2d if this is what we're going to do? Just pretend and blog.
