If the Scholar uniform truly is from the Nymian age, I'm assuming that the medals are from the War of the Magi. Nym's tactical units of Scholar + Marauder pairs held off the city's enemies against seemingly impossible odds all the way up to when the tonberry sickness destroyed the nation.
