    The barding is cosmetic the ones you can buy are just different looks and also apply to getting the achievement for having all the Company barding choices.

    If it is different than what you get with the chocobo initially, it's worth buying. Of course, that also means the starter barding for the other two Grand Companies is unavailable, which is unfortunate. I hope the initial barding is made available for purchase in the future, not to mention higher ranks than Second Serpent Lieutenant.
