Ultima HM DPS Tips

I was searching the forums for information, but I only found stuff in the healer section. Not that relevant.

Can someone explain how this fight works, and give good DPS tips? The amount of dodging I need to do is nigh insane ESPECIALLY because no one in chat (I use DF) explains what's going to happen so my first few tries I was just freaking the f**k out and trying to dodge things I had no idea were going to happen while keeping my DoTs up (pet upkeep isn't a big problem).

We get close but tend to wipe on 3rd(?) laser set. Also at some point a ship comes in and blows me to all hell. I don't know what that's about, it seems unavoidable?

Read this and just get used to the fight. It's hard for melee DPS and BLM because it involves a lot of movement. You'll only get better by practising.

It is unavoidable but you can mitigate it. It's basically the same thing as the full room AOE from the original Ultima fight where you have to run to the other side of the arena only this time... It comes from both side!

Ultima is, like a long growing list of other "dodge everything!!1!" fights, one of those battles that makes me wonder if career brd's know how easy they have it. When mnk's physically can not keep their GL up, and with BLM's inability to cast while moving at all, their DPS can drop off a cliff on these types of fights (these are the only 2 dps jobs i have, so that's all i can comment on). That being said, Ultima is probably my favorite fight. It's all about practicing these fights over and over. You WILL suck at first, even if you've "watched the video". But you will eventually find a rhythm and be able to pull off meaningful dps. Titan Ex is my biggest challenge as far as keeping up DPS due to constant moving/dodging (I do most things on BLM, as I just got MNK to 50 a few days ago and it's undergeared at the moment). There are only 2 sets of lasers btw, and they, along w/ the 3rd set of orbs, are usually the bottleneck for a group that wins or loses.

Well this past time we got to when he casts Ultima so I guess I'm improving... I have to say, it's really annoying dodging one line of his delayed green lasers just to find myself standing in another line. >.<

As a SMN my pet and DoTs can keep up the damage even if I have to dodge, but it becomes a serious issue when tackling the magitek bits. Damage output is just not as instant as BLM etc. So I guess I have it easy on some parts, harder on others.

I would say smn probably have it much easier even on the magitek bits. You can just set a pet on one, and spam Ruin II while you move around (BLM have to spam scathe unless you can get really lucky with positioning). Or even better you can dps two at the same time if you really wanted to by setting your pet on one, and ruin II spam the other.

If u got to the ultima cast then mechanically u are doing fine but ur not sliding enough dps in. as a SMN dps in Ultima, i wonder if you could bane your dots to nearby lazers when they come out that would be a great start on 2 (maybe 3) lazers.

If he casts ultima then the fight has gone on for 10 minutes. It's difficult to kill him before he finishes that cast. So you need to dps harder to kill it before he starts.

You can. While it helps a bit Bane will only spread your DoTs to 3 targets, as such I tend to spam Miasma II while running from laser to laser.

Bane does help but it's also tough since you want your DoTs to be as fresh as possible before you spread, and also the bits need to be relatively close to each other. This method actually works WONDERS on Garuda's plumes though. You can easily cut their health by half.

Another issue I have is playing on the PS3. I have to do button gymnastics when switching between the two main hotbars I use + the pet hotbar. The worst is when I accidentally send my pet away because I messed up the hotbar switch.
