Disagree. I find it much more fun when things are marked and everything goes smoothly. If you're going to manufacture a challenge in duty finder, you might want to make sure the rest of the party is up for it.Tanking is more fun when you don't mark.
DPS is more fun when there are no marks.
Marks are almost completely unnecessary in this game except for in a few cases in extremely high level play (a single mark to indicate kill order on a specific set of adds in a difficult raid encounter, for example, is the only time marks are ever needed)
People getting uppity about marks in 4 man dungeons are hilarious.
.
So should they for all the DPS as well. Many of them cannot bother with marking.
So this is becoming the Tank fault? DPS will know their job better if the mob is marked?
Did you know, there is an enmity gauge available on the screen. A good DPS know when to slow down, or he's a bad DPS.
Maybe? Maybe they wont, so from your perspective, on top of doing everything a tank has to do, the tank also need to "aim" for the DPS, coz DPS cannot be bother aiming? interesting.If you did your job correctly and marked mobs maybe the DPS would see those big 1,2,3 numbers in their face, essentially making your job easier and helping your healer out. So when you are doing your job, The healer can do their's and if they aren't lazy they could help DPS making the fights go faster.
Inserting something like that in a Tomahawk/Shield lob Macro will take it on & off everytime you use the said ability. In the case of a PLD, he might mark as (1) the mob he's trying to get enmity back on, what would happen then?
I don't know if you realise that DPS shouldn't have an excuse for their lack of attention to a fight/target, when you tank you tank, you don't babysit the DPS. Many tanks could tell you that they did mark things but that it did not help.
New Quest to teach DPS to follow Markings. Mandatory Please.
I used to mark all the time while leveling, but in end game, there is so much AOE being thrown around, it's kind of pointless. Plus, as a Warrior, nothing is being put to sleep due to OP/SC waking them up and besides, nothing peels off me most of the time anyway.
I'll still target specific targets some times when that target needs to die quick, but marking to maintain aggro becomes pretty pointless.
Though I agree that tanks in early dungeons should be doing it. As long as the DPS follow along, it makes everything a little easier. Then again, healing those low level dungeons while leveling is so slow and boring, I normally don't mind as healing everyone gives me something to do other than spam stone I.

Have fun in stone Vigil with that attitude then! I use duty finder for everything and believe me preparation is always better than having full party die in an easy spot just because a dps had a heroic feeling deep inside.
Considerations for a tank in no particular order:
Positioning the mob so it's AoE doesn't hit the casters;
Positioning the mob so the DD can hit its back;
Positioning the mob with regards to other enemies/environmental hazards;
Avoiding AoEs where possible to reduce strain on healers;
Engaging all mobs and maintaining hate on them;
Grabbing any wanderers/mobs aggroed by DD/healers who wandered themselves;
Managing cooldowns and using them in a way that best suits the enemies engaged;
Tanking enemies in an order that removes the greatest threat first;
Managing MP;
Managing Weaponskill Cooldowns;
Using the best Weaponskill for the situation (Stun/Silence/MP recovery/threat);
A decent DPS's considerations:
Assisting the MT on the chosen mob;
Utilising Stun/Debuffs;
Avoiding AoE.
A crappy DPS's considerations:
Doing the most damage possible on whatever mob he feels like hitting;
Trying to pull hate off the tank in order to show how awesome he is;
Ensuring tank knows he sucks if he can't keep hate on everything.
You're more than welcome to believe what you want. I don't particularily enjoy you implying I'm lying, though. I know my experiences when marking. Most dps I've come across don't give a damn. As I've stated, it rarely matters. It's not difficult to keep emnity on multiple mobs. There's a wide range of players. For all good groups, there are just as many (if not more) worse ones.I think some people just outright lie to make an argument. Of course we can't actually say what their experiences are, but seriously, when I'm tanking I always mark and it is very rare for people to not follow the order. Organization always makes things easier. I have a hard time believing anyone would have a drastically different experience. Well actually, I just don't believe them at all.
Edit : Based on this thread alone, there are other tanks with similar experiences to my own and a few with experiences that match yours.

I've tanked every dungeon in the game with that attitude without any issues. DPS can't pull off me that easy lol. It's mostly bad tanks who mark I've noticed
It's not an issue with players pulling off you, it's about focusing down a mob so the run goes faster and smoother.
If I'm not mistaken, when the tank switches targets a blue arc/arrow briefly extends from them to the targeted mob, correct? When leveling BLM and MNK, I didn't really find it difficult to notice the blue arc shooting from the tank to know, "Hey, they're attacking a different mob, so I should probably follow suit."
I started on PLD first and WAR second, and I will admit that I do mark my target mob simply out of convenience for the party. It's easy to have a pull macro that automatically marks a "1" or "O" when using Shield Lob/Tomahawk. But tanks these days shouldn't have any issues with holding hate on multiple targets in dungeons unless they are vastly outgeared by the DPS they are running with.
I guess my opinion is that we don't and shouldn't need hand-holding quests to teach people how to mark, target, and heal properly. People just need to be the tiniest bit more observant to notice the visual cues that are already in the game.
