Mind blown.Interesting theory, but no that's not the trend most of the other tier III materia follow on Balmung. In fact, in the vast majority of cases the other tier 3s are selling for not only less, but far less than their tier 4 counterparts. Heaven's Eye III is around 1.6k each while 4 is around 11.5k-12k each, Savage might 3 is around 5.5-6k each whereas 4 is about 30k, Savage Aim 3 is 13-15k but 4 is hovering around 40k, quickarm 3 is about 1.5k while quickarm 4 is around 11k.
In other words, no that's clearly not what's going on here.
Edit : Because I figure someone might bring up supply/demand. No, There are actually a lot more (more than double the amount) of quicktongue 3 materia up for sale than their are tier 4.

You have to do some market research. Crafting level 50 stuff isn't always the best way to make money. I've been doing just fine making mid-level HQ gear on Leatherworker as I've been leveling it up. You may not be making 50k at a time or whatever, but selling 20 items at day at 5k each adds up over time.

I wish I had your prices. Somewhat. That's true, the market on Balmung is incredibly bad and very volatile. I'll give you some examples.
1.) Right now, Quicktongue materia IV is selling for about 14k, Quicktongue materia III, however, is selling for 25k.
2.) The average price of HQ crafted i70 armor is hovering around 50-60k atm.
3.) Philosophy items are selling for around 2k a piece.
4.) A few nights ago, HQ Alkalurops was selling for 49k a piece when I went to sleep. When I woke up the next day, I hopped on to check my own sales and HQ Alkalurops (the cheapest up) was 119k. That's a price fluctuation of 70,000g in a matter of about 7 and a half hours.
Balmung's economy is so screwed up right now.
On Tonberry, Quicktongue 3 was about 6k last I checked. Didn't check QT4.
Savage Aim 3 is about 6k, 2-star crafted HQ is under 30k. Philo mats are going for about 2.5k.
I do more selling than buying, I'd love your prices lol

Slow and steady wins the race.
Do Dailies (3-4k Reward)
Get a Treasure Map (10k reward)(boarskin/peistskin)
While waiting for Peistskin/Boarskin to pop, I farm shards, after 1 week, I have 400 to sell for 10-15g a piece for 4-6k (2-3k a week)
Do the Duty Rullette High Level as Tank (3k gil from drops, 2.2k from Reward = 5.2k)
Craft some HQ food for raiding to sell on market wards (10k worth)
= 28-30k / day
x30 days
= ~900k / month
= ~2.7 Million every content patch.
I'm sure there are expenses such as buying food if you can't make your own and repairs from raiding, and teleportation costs.
So how about we make it a nice round number
2 million every 3 months. When personal housing comes out maybe in 6 months... you'll hve 4 million, not too shabby.

I hope to undercut by enough that the next guy will say "well, that's too low for me, i'm going to try another item to undercut" other than "that guy cut down by one gil, i'm going to cut down by two."
"There's a time when a man needs to fight, and a time when he needs to accept that his destiny is lost, that the ship has sailed, and that only a fool would continue. The truth is, I've always been a fool."
You'll have to drop it down to like 100g or something stupidly low to make it so that it won't be undercut further, and even then, people will undercut you. So yeah, that's gonna snowball on you fast.

money is in mercing

Am i the only one who sees a problem with OPs rant?Every time I try to sell items in the market, I get undercut. I see an item is selling for 3200 gil. Great, so I make some of them, put them up for sale for 2800 (thinking i'll get them sold) and then come back the next day to see nothing sold. Same item is now selling for 2000, and then 1800, and then 1000 and then 500 gil. I can never seem to sell more than one or two items before I am undercut again. It seems the money I make at level 50 is no different than what I was making at level 20.

You're part of the problem.
Hardly anything worth spending gil on, and those items which are worth it have way too many people making them
