I've always been a very harsh critic. Mostly because they had 8 years of data on what works and what doesn't. That alone makes a lot of this mess unacceptable. However, that said, I am waiting till the patch comes out before I cast another unkind and disparaging word. Things I saw from the pug snippet annoyed me - however - there is only so much you can extrapolate from that tiny video they posted to try and satiate us.

If, as they say, the majority of the battle system has been redone you can only go so far with the minute offerings we have seen. For once, as aforementioned, I am going to wait to pass judgment. It's not so much blind faith but pragmatism. I think they know if they mess this up the game will be beyond repair.

Whining, bitching, spoiled forum kids are boring me more than this game is. You guys got nothing better to do with your lives than complain endlessly on the forums about the game.

Seriously. Either get over it or gtfo.

I happen to prefer the company of angry old people more than bratty children. Though I'd rather not be around either of them, it is a matter of personal opinion.

Well in one aspect this game is as dime a dozen as any MMO. The story.

It's shallow and the quests have no single player FF-feeling like in every MMO except XI.
MMO gamers have grown used to this kind of cheap production values but as mostly a console gamer and a XI veteran I can't stand the cheap way quest presentation and mission gameplay are put together.

From SE that produced great stories like VI, VII, VIII, IX and XI this is downright unacceptable.

just because you like ff games doesn't mean you will like every story they make. I like the story so far in ffxiv. And My fave city story is gridania. It reminds me a lot of Zelda.

I'm not a huge ff fan and only story I liked was 8. Once they added voice acting it was sorta meh. Thhey picked annoying sound people in most cases tidus, and hope are my 2 least fav characters. Vloud in advent children sounded like an emo little girl. But I did like charavters such as paine from x-2 and sephy from kh 2.

There certainly are a lot of strong opinions about a system none of us have tried yet...

    @OP

The first time i played FF14, it immediately resembled old-school turn-based battle yet in real time. I really enjoyed it and knew people would call it slow. It seems like people these days can't stand turn-based RPGs or anything not resembling FPS and the contributions the genre has touched on.
More importantly, the MMORPG genre in and of itself seems to be embedded in everyone's brains that every single MMO is to be held to this artificial standard that needs to be applied to every MMO or it becomes instant fail.

Personally, I'm welcoming auto-attack after having played for so long. Now that spamming is a non-issue, i just want strategic battles.
It was always sad that WoW raids were so dynamic and made FF11 fights look like play-doh. By this, i mean i don't want them to think they can just toss in FF11 fights & environmental gimmicks and call it good.
This has always been my top worry for FF14, over everything including the flaws.

    Crappy FF11 + Environment example:

Monster is tank & spank. Once HP reaches a certain % it uses an omgWTF ability that can easily be avoided with a stun or moving OOR.
The monster is immune to Physical while the lights are out & immune to magical while the lights are on. Each time lights switch off & on he resets hate (FF11 made a habit of hate resetting with VNM, please don't do this again, all the time).

    MoreAwesomer Example:
Same as above but monster could have body parts that need to be focused on. Perhaps they regenerate over time. The monster might warp around or run off real quick to heal. If say, archers didn't disable his movement (legs?) he'll rush the healers and eat them.
Now assume we're fighting an Ochu. He uses draw-in on a few healers and maybe a tank (they are essentially riding on Ochu while he drains them). The rest of the party would need to find a weakness to exploit to free the members. Maybe they kite Ochu into a geyser that randomly shoots up and he falls back down freeing everyone.
Now he does it again, but this time he won't fall for the geyser trick again (etc etc).

I don't expect anything this epic, but for gods' sake please give us a challenge.

I just had this conversation yesterday with a RL friend about taking Final Fantasy into the MMO genre. He didn't like the console elements in the MMO. The menu-driven system of interacting with, practically, everything further turned him off.
Overall, he's comfortable with keyboard + mouse & playing games similar to Rift/WoW and believes that's what MMORPGs are & should be modeled after.

I was pretty much saying that as long as FF14 can become addicting/immersible then it'll be on the right track. He went on about the need for general novelty items and how they're key to drawing in people (mounts, pets, fireworks, tossin' a ball back and forth, etc...) I responded that not every single MMO needs to have modern day humor & elements because it would break immersion in game setting (that didn't seem to matter).
I interjected that i would rather have mini-games, card games & a place like the golden saucer than just novelty items. We finally agreed that if they could cater to both the things we like in the game then they could really reach out to everyone (especially if we found ourselves teaming up to obtain the things we like).

It's sad that i know most people think the same way when they think MMORPG (maybe not around here though).
