Or even the genre for that matter I can see that, I wouldn't call Dark Souls a frustrating game either, just one that has no mercy in punishing you for your mistakes, but also helping you learn from them- but it does take a certain type of player, patience is your best virtue when playing that game, my friend on his very first guideless run only died 5x.
He was very observant of everything around him, and would watch enemies attack patterns for like 3 minutes before even engaging them.
I'm pretty excited for the new content. I've been running around in near full allagan long enough to wonder when I'm supposed to be getting the next tier of gear. The game has been out for a while and it's time for a new tier to work towards. That's just how the modern MMO's go. Beat the current tier, get your "BiS", wait for next tier, repeat.
As much as I love the Souls series, using it as a comparison doesn't make much sense, as it's Apples to Oranges. Dark Souls really doesn't have ENDLESS re playability unless you want to tinker with stats. In the end, you're still killing the same bosses, but you can tinker with your stats and gear to make it somewhat different, thus giving the illusion of a new game. In the end, it feels like endless gameplay because you enjoy playing it so much. I'm still SUPER excited for Dark Souls 2 though. It's a shame the PC version won't be out March 11th. /sigh
And that doesn't depress you? I miss multiple equally viable gearsets, situational gear sets etc. Things that take years to acquire.I'm pretty excited for the new content. Gear is just gear, what matter in the game is to play, it's just here for vanity and progression purpose, obtaining gear shouldn't be a goal to achieve but a mean to achieve end game content.
Marketing the game for casual gamers is what allowed SE to make a profit off this game, and they will ultimately be the the downfall of the game.Too casual? Lazy? Oh you think that people without 8h of game-time a day are lazy or "too much casual"?
That's neat, people should all not work and play more so that developers can aim for more RNG based MMOs because that would bring them more money.
The game is more casual friendly because there are more casual gamers out there, gamers who can play 6h+ a day ain't even 2% of the actual player base, I'm sure of it.
If people want games whee you need lots of time and effort to get anything they should play more Korean games then.
Maybe that would please them more.
And SE is not copying WoW they're just making the game more casual friendly and guess who are the majority players in wow... the casual gamers.

Certain gear as a goal has always been a part of an MMORPG - As it always have been even in WoW until recent expansions. Then again, MMORPGs haven't been MMORPGs since 2007ish and lots seem to like everything being meaningless.
Content didn't last in XI because of "Super low drop rates" (though some gear was notoriously awful I won't deny) it lasted because up until Abyssea and the level cap increases past 75, Tanaka maintained a mantra of never obsoleting old content but instead adding new content with new rewards that were comparable with older ones.
Didn't feel like grinding Sky? Go do Limbus/Sea/Salvage/Assault/Dynamis/whatever for your endgame gear. They were always adding more things to do without ever negating older stuff and it's what led to the thing I adored most about XI (after the presentation and job system) - endless stuff to do, and all of it meaningful. Even if you had everything you wanted it was fun helping out friends too. XI was not only the epitome of the series, but it just seemed to have one of if not the best MMO communities out there.
It makes me miss the old days on Seraph shouting in the dunes, even though I had many, many gripes with the game over the 9 years I played it heh. XIV just doesn't have the heart to it that XI did. I haven't cancelled my sub exactly but I did turn off my automatic renewal the other day (50-odd days left) as I feel I've given it the mandatory 6-month test and I sadly don't feel as confident as I once did about the game's future, not like I did with XI.
Sadly, people who didn't played it, played it till level 10 and quit or had zero good experience with it would say you're using rose tinted glasses or living in nostalgia, even though many, many reviewers (and even SE themselves) felt XI was pretty much a landmark game in the series. XIV doesn't have the heart because they designed it to capture the general MMO playerbase that doesn't really care about much beyond "GIVE ME INSTANCE DUNGEONS! INSTANCE EVERYTHING! WHY DOES THIS GEAR LAST LONGER THAN A MONTH? FAIL GAME DESIGN! MAKE EVERYTHING WORTHLESS!" crowd.
This is why love it or hate it, FFXIV 1.0 - 1.23 had so much potential that just seemed to get thrown away. ARR has the better foundation but it really does feel like it's an MMO that's been released at least 70x the past 5 years.
