when they get banned for "hiding" there connection then you'll see a post about "why me i didnt know." just like this post.it's funny that se says they are not a violation, but almost every other mmo, including wow, says vpn's are against their tos. wow is very straight forward about any use of vpn's changes the route from your isp to the server bypassing hops and gives players an unfair advantage so they are illegal.
I really don't understand why people are acting like parsers somehow benefit the community in some way. I've been playing MMO's all the way back to U:O, and parsers weren't really something back then. No one cared, people just did the stuff they wanted to do, worked together to do it, if someone was a weak link then they formed a new party of people they selected, maybe replaced a person or two with different folks, and got it done that way. Parsers simply do one of three things, they allow people to fine tune their own DPS, which I'm ok with. They give people room to stroke themselves about how awesome they are and brag about it all over their FC and LS, which, whatever I guess, but it is annoying and stupid. And lastly, it gives them ammunition to act like MMO gods, and everyone else that does a DPS lower than them is inferior, needs to be shot on site, and can't play a game to save their life.
Honestly, I've seen more of the last option, a little of the second one, and talked to one person that did option one. That phrase that a few bad apples ruins the whole thing? Yeah, kind of applies here. If people wanted parser to be allowed, and actually cared about the app, and were using it to benefit themselves only, then they wouldn't do options 2 or 3. But that isn't the case here. For instance, would SE be taking notice and warning people if people weren't using parser to act like jerks? No, probably not....I doubt they'd really care, and we would probably never hear about it again. Instead, people are using it as a weapon against other people, and the community is shocked SE is responding with warnings? Really?
As to the people saying "But we would never complete a DPS race unless we kicked X"....like I said before, disband the party, invite the people back you thought did good, and find a suitable replacement that way then. Putting someone down, calling them names, and acting like they generally do, isn't acceptable behavior, and shouldn't be tolerated honestly.
If people enjoy this type of behavior and want to play a game and feel like ultimate awesome, then there are plenty of RPG's that don't rely on other people and you can still do things at your pace, do all of the hard content, and brag about how epic you are online. Relying on other people to help you do something, punching them in the face when they don't perform the way you want them to (I've even seen this happen to people that join parties to try and help others, out of kindness), and then posting online how awesome you are and how many bads you've run into is asinine. It makes zero sense to me why people even bother playing an MMO if they can't treat other people like human beings, and actually try to have fun and work together with them to beat something. You'd be better off playing a game like Dragon Age, where you have control over the whole party, can pause the battle, issue orders, and things like that. And at the end of the day, if you win or lose, you only have yourself to congratulate/blame.

YES the thread is about tunneling software... BUT until you can show us how a parser (something that simply reads the text in your battle log and puts it into an easy to read format so you dont have to take a pencil and paper and do it yourself) appears "directly control anything for the FFXIV client"...
The equivalent of taking a calculator and adding up all your damage from you battle log!!!!
The SPECIFIC thing in that answer was "since it doesnt appear to directly control anything for the FFXIV client, then it is not against the rules".
The emphasis was not on VPN... it just happened to be in the thread that someone created. The emphasis was that it was something that did not DIRECTLY control anything in the game.
If they changed their mind... fine...
Explain to me how that directly controls the game or modifies the game, or bots the game, or hacks the game in any way.
SE reps to the community have even relayed the message that they do not CARE even if ppl use the Twintania app through ZAm and BG.....
Why???
This single GM doesnt know what they are talking about. It only reads, no writing is done nor will ever be nor will hooks into the game be provided.
Or can YOU explain why everyone and their mother has openly talked about parses in game since LAUNCH, and this has NEVER come up before....

Until you know what youre talking about, go kindly have several seats, since you'll be unable to explain to everyone how an automated calculator is writing to the game......

Not enough Facepalms
SE just needs to give us an answer: Yes or No.
Waiting for a response, more so because I'm curious to see what it is now.
But I will say this... back in the day (iirc) SE said they would allow the use of 3rd-party programs that they permitted/approved. But at any time (if people like it or not) they can change their mind and change the rules if they find it being abused in any way (IE: gaining an edge, used for harassment, etc...) or if they just feel like it. If the Dev said it was ok for the tunneling/VPN thread, then it was ok for that and only that program in question in the thread.
Now if it said 'are parsers and tunneling/VPN allowed' and he said the same thing, then yes that could be used to say 'see its considered the same thing so it's fine'. But it was a specific question about tunneling and only tunneling.
Supposedly at some point SE did say yes to this parser app everyone is speaking about, but I haven't see any links or information put into this thread that shows a quote/thread where SE is specifically saying yes to parsers (that quote about tunneling doesn't count, in my mind, since it was a very specific question about that, not this), just people saying it was said. So, due to this, SE needs to respond and let players know... now that paersers are being mentioned specifically in the thread on the OF... is it yes or no to their use with the game?
I honestly don't care as long as people aren't using it in a harassing method and only for self improvement or helpful means. But people that are using it need to know so they aren't banned for using something that is receiving mixed messages of: it is and isn't ok.
Instead of suspending people's account for using that app, why doesn't SE make their own official parser?
I'd just like to be able to parse my informations and damages to improve my skills. Why not collaborate with the developers of FFXIV App instead of banning their users?
Not really adding much to the conversation here, 'cause i don't think i can at this point; Though, it seems that SQE is going to celebrate their new MMO, which was boasted to have add-on support, by banning the most harmless kind of add-on.
All in all, classic move by SQE.
Not really, as the saying goes, this is a storm in a teacup. Nobody actually got banned. Not really adding much to the conversation here, 'cause i don't think i can at this point; Though, it seems that SQE is going to celebrate their new MMO, which was supposed to have add-on support, by banning the most harmless kind of add-on.

Guy was being obnoxious, got reported for being obnoxious and clearly using a third party tool, lied through his teeth to the GM. Deserved the warning really.
And Peptaru, SE have explicitly given the go ahead to the developers of the tool. Stating that it's ok because it doesn't interfere with the game client (i.e. actually tamper with memory and etc.). This is the same as using a VPN. Your argument is entirely invalid.
