You don't need to farm potash to make money as a LTW. :-\
Start selling various leathers - HQ them if possible. They'll sell like hotcakes. Especially Aldgoat and Toad Leather.
Sell gathering gear. Gatherers don't get the best gear from their quests, and there are often gaps. Shoes, gloves, and hats can really add to your bank.

I cannot agree more with this. I spent all yesterday leveling up my Leatherworker from 1-30 on my alt, and I spent tens of thousands of gil on skins, alumen, metals, etc. I then did all of the levequests I could, and crafted every single piece of gear available to me, putting any HQ piece I made up on the market before I went to bed last night. Woke up this morning, and I made back nearly all of my money, and if everything else sells I'll have turned a sizable profit. You don't need to farm potash to make money as a LTW. :-\

As the saying goes, "One man's trash is another man's treasure." You may not need what you make, but someone else probably does =P
