In all fairness this statement isn't really true and the same could be said for anyone playing any game they aren't that into, you just described one type of person.
I didn't play FFXI because I had nothing else to play, FFXI was like a drug for me, I couldn't get enough of it.

There's a reason why Maat's Cap was called 'the no-life cap' by most in the FFXI community, and you basically just summed it up - the ridiculous amount of time you would have to devote to the game to get it. Most players just don't have that time, and are understandably cynical about those which do.

^This. This whole thread is basically players unable or unwilling to let go of the past, accept that each FF game is unique and has it's own style of play, and play FFXIV on it's own terms. Instead they whine and complain that FFXIV will fail because it's not FFXI-2 (or, more rarely, FFXIV 1.23). I loved FFXI and even 1.23, but I accept that's the past. ARR is the future whether you like it or not. So all you can do is accept it and move on, or sink and leave.

Terribly off topic, but what server were/are you on in XI? Your forum name is very, very familiar.

XIV isn't going to fail because it's not XI-2. It's going to fail because it just isn't that fun; and no amount of instances, primals, vanity slots, or 24-man raids is going to change that.

Says you. Just because you don't enjoy the game doesn't mean it's going to "fail". It's been going pretty strong since release and while it'll never please everyone, it has a healthy base of subscribers that are enjoying the game. If you count not having millions of subs as "failing" then yes it has failed to meet that standard but luckily Square Enix is satisfied with the steady number they've got.

You're fooling yourself if you think this game is going to have any sort of longevity going in this direction.

I didn't even notice your name till you mentioned mine but now that you mention it and I noticed your name...

HOLLY CRAP! Manaleak, it has been years.

I guess this rings a bell to you also... Vandork? HAHAHA

Guess which server I was on.

Just goes to show how memorable FFXI really was.

Well yeah it really was that hard to earn. I think the no life only really applied to those who got it fast, I got mine slowly over the period of something like 6 years.

My reaction to the first Maats cap I ever saw Was the feeling of WOH! /shocked.
Also to Manaleak, this is an extremely old screenshot of my character but I am sure you recognize my dragoon in this gear.

Also to those who don't think Tanaka is awesome.

He has a Maats cap and a K-club!

For those who don't know the K-club was also one of the rarest items in FFXI and was the most expensive item gil could buy ranging from 40-100mil depending on the time frame and which server you bought it on. The item could turn your single hit auto attack into an attack that attacks 1-8 times per auto attack, if you had this club you were able to basically spam weaponskills.

In FFXI you couldn't spam your weaponskills like you can in FFXIV because you only gained TP by hitting your enemy or by getting hit, because you attacked alot more often this TP would build up at an much faster than normal rate using the K-Club.

In FFXIV over powered items just won't even exist, isn't that kind of lame?
Wouldn't you like to see some rare items?
I always found it fun. I think it's a shame that nothing is even rare in FFXIV, that everyone can get everything, that no ones gear is different or special in the game.

Sure with Vanity players will all look different but all there stats will be the same lvl 90 gear.
