id also like if, ala FFXII (12) that when enemies get low on health their auto-attacks combo'd. as it is, they just toss their auto attack in there. should be more like tumult with titan.

Oh god please no. Twintania combos as it is. DS+plummet+autoattack, unblocked, unparried, down you go!
With no mitigation on the DS, I believe it's intended that the tank goes down. There's a large number of skills to mitigate that damage (virus / storm's path / rage of halone / eye for an eye / tank cd's / well timed cure II's / Regen / stoneskin / adlo), and if you aren't maximizing the potential and timing of them, you kind of deserve to wipe guaranteed IMO.
It's not luck, and can be avoided 100% if everyone is on point with the mitigation.
As far as RNG in fights goes, I think that if they had a separate mode for it and weren't afraid to experiment with some of the ideas in this thread, it could make for a really fun challenge that people couldn't just memorize, and had to actually react to.
With the right mix of "guaranteed devastating attacks" and "random dangerous abilities that may proc" and a range of maybe 15-20 pre-created rotations (so people do not just "get lucky" on RNG), I think it can be done.
I wouldn't alter the current fights, but something new would be good.
