What would work and is more in line with what we have currently in game is if you take a heavy damage penalty to all your equipped gear for each death. Something around 10-15% loss for every death.
Bad part about that is, if you're going to repair anyway, why fear a little death. Currently repairing a 10% equipment is the same as repairing a 74% equipment.

And if you can repair your own equipment..that shall we say is pretty darn cheap, death warp away!

And for SP debuff...it's all XP debt in WoW...it curbed people somewhat but not much for end-gamers. Those reckless end-gamers are still dying by the dozens every so often.

It all comes down to SP again, though de-leveling is a controversy.

I am strongly opposed to SP/XP loss as a death penalty!

Of course I think there should be a death penalty. There should always be consequences for your actions. But it should be some kind of soul sickness or gear damage.

Dying in FFXI was infuriating. Deleveling wasn't only a timesink to regain the precious exp you'd worked so hard for, but it meant that if you were wearing level 18 armor and you deleveled to 17, you were now naked. Because of this, you were forced to let extra armor sets clutter up your inventory.

Those were the dark times. May they never return.

When I convinced my husband to play this game with me, he had two conditions: 1) no forced party play 2) no exp-loss death penalty. It is decidedly a game breaker for him, and I'd be sad if he quit because it was implemented.

Honestly, I'm just fine with the death penalty the way it is. It's better than something that makes you throw your controller across the room.

    I think there needs to be more of a threat to death more then oh you have to wait a little before you can fight again. No one really cares if you die right now. I would say adding the SP/XP loss would be the best idea but not losing your lvl. I hated that in 11 lol. Id rather it not be something like you had to go find ur body or you lose items. Id probably leave the game lol. Exp/SP is easy enough to get back. And raise can cut down on the loss just like in 11. oh and... RAISE animation!! <_<;

I'd like to see a death penalty being implemented. It should be SP loss too, anything less would be a minor annoyance, and what we need is something we must really freat.

In other words a casual game. Then I would suggest a WoW clone solution.

XP debt, then have it wiped by paying RMT. That's the only way you're going to ever satisfy casual and hardcore.

Otherwise people who have your opinions wouldn't last long anyway, and would naturally deviate to a more casual environment like FtP games.

As always, if you're playing with people who screw around, either you leave or they leave, and this is partly that reason.

i think battles farther away from nodes would be reason enough to fear death. fear of travel > loss of anything. time = sp that's why having to wait is so terrible. maybe death would kick you out of leve or behest, make ppl pay attention more

Sp loss will just create massive uproar unless the people like me in XI continue dying for the sake of our party... Change job back to DRK.... /embraces death

Without a doubt there should be a consequence for dieing. The way the system is set up right now, its just "oh well- another death"... without even caring...

I think implementing SP lose is the way to go with this.. not sure what the best % is.. but something that DOES hurt... 5%? And then having someone cast Raise half that lose?

One thing we should all keep in mind, that unlike FFXI.. we are EASILY able to get a buffer by doing solo leves (if necessary)... Its not like you need to go out and organize a party with a bunch of people... you have the freedom to do it on your own time~

I think that players should be unhappy when they die...

What are you talking about? WoW doesn't have xp debt. The death penalty is gear damage. After a typical night of raiding, a plate-wearing tank shells out about 100 gold for repairs.
