I think the personal homes will be more like large inn rooms or maybe just a private yard (no neighbors) with a house. Several reasons: Wards are fine for hundreds of FCs but they don't seem to scale to thousands or even tens of thousands of characters on each world. There would need to be like 200 wards per city. Also, the medium or large house seems too huge for just one person, especially considering the cost of enough furniture to fill it. That's 33% of each ward that would have no purpose.

But some of the decisions SE made about housing don't make sense to me, and SE has said almost nothing about personal housing, so I won't try to predict what personal housing will be like.

Same. I'm thinking similar to FFXI rent-a-room with some yard space.

Sorry, but I'm just no seeing SE having the hardware to maintain and display THOUSANDS of houses for all the players in wards similar to FC housing. There's just no logical way except individually instanced areas for each player with the ability to enter a friends' house.

If you pay attention to how the story/game is played out to you then you'd notice that YOU are the hero, not your group. A personal house could be a rewarded plot of land in your own instance for deeds at a later time. This allows your individual house to stand alone, but doesn't line up thousands of houses in wards similar to FC housing. They seriously do NOT have the hardware to keep all those instances stored and displayed at all times.

So if 11 year old FFXI can do it, it would be expected that FFXIV can handle it. Besides, if a small FC house is the same size as a FFXI Moghouse then personal housing will probably be less than half the size of your INN ROOM.
That's entirely doable, and is what we've been saying. An individually instanced house is something the game can handle. What the game can't handle is thousands of uniquely decorated player houses lined up in wards similar to FC housing for all the players on the server. Instancing works, wards don't.

Man, I wonder how LOTRO managed it. Magic, I guess!

They managed it by having the infrastructure in place to handle it as well as combining personal and group housing into the same housing. Also all of your characters on your account share the EXACT same house. Also according to the Wiki:
Each neighborhood consists of 30 houses:

    16 standard houses
    10 deluxe houses
    4 kinship houses

Each server starts with a small number of neighborhoods. When all the houses in one neighborhood are sold, a new instance is generated and more houses become available for purchase. While this process is expansive, it is not indefinite. As a result, some servers, such as the highly populous Brandywine, have had issues with shortages of certain housing types.
Even their system is reaching its limitations and can't sustain what players want. Servers on FFXIV:ARR have been lacking since Beta and they aren't about to do a major overhaul to give you houses when they barely did it so that we could actually log in to the game in the first month.

I don't think LOTRO was available to play on PS3, was it?

I'm not saying that every problem should be forgiven with the, "well, that's the tradeoff for allowing PS3 players to play!" answer, but, I do think that a sizeable amount of problems that FF14 faces, are due to the cross-platform nature of the product.

Hopefully the move over to PS4 in February will solve some of the limitation issues.

Then again, PS3 players are still going to be able to log in and play in February when the PS4 version drops. So, I don't know what the answer to this is.

I think this is something that gets overlooked a lot. I remember that Funcom tried to make Age of Conan available for PS3, but couldn't pull it off due to limitations/conflicts between the PC and PS3 versions.

It won't. Consoles are a double-edged sword with this kind of stuff. You can get more players, therefore more accounts and more revenue. The tradeoff is that you ALWAYS have to make sure that all content is playable on that console. FFXI was released on the PS2 and PC first in Japan, and still has to be playable on PS2 hardware. Even though PCs have greatly improved and you can play on XBOX 360, FFXI will forever be limited by hardware limitations on the PS2. It's one of the reasons World of Warcraft never went console. They would never be able to improve graphics or engines for the environment if it had to match console hardware/software.

I would not mind the house being an individual instance as long as it's big, has a yard, and others can enjoy it also.

I'm going to bet all the unsold Small Land plots right now will be made available to be purchased at a "Personal Housing" Price. Since Many FC's will not want a small house, and that will serve to fill in all the gaps in the Wards.

I don't know about legacy servers but for non-legacy servers this make sense to me. Land price should be a relative value compare to all other stuffs on MB.
