So why was Summoner advertised as a pet class

Did you ever think maybe some ppl love to solo {me} and Titan is very good for that as he tanks i stand on the side lines or for fates if you run into one were the tank sucks ect. it's not all about partys and most Summoners know what pet to use when doing runs so

@OP; because in patch 2.3 they're planning to release a skill "Tame" that allows you to capture enemies other than the primals to do battle with other pet trainers in the hopes of entering the Pet League and challenge the Elite Four to become the ultimate Pet Master.

That and there's all so a class coming called heart of the cards were we stand in a big Arena and duel with 3D cut outs :P

Personally I find that even in endgame, Ifrit still has uses. AK for example, I prefer him to Garuda for both Demon Wall and the last boss. In the Demon Wall fight, it takes too much time to place Garuda so that she doesn't die from the AoE attacks. Ifrit as a melee dps just stays on the wall and I don't have to worry about it. I suppose some would just call that lazy pet micro-managing, but if you have enough DPS you don't need Garuda for Contagion anyway. Garuda also has an aoe attack, so if there's a black mage or white mage and they plan on sleeping mobs, I will sometimes use Ifrit instead of Garuda.

But they aren't pets, not really. They're like a summon that gives you a passive, like if summoning a minion gave you extra DPS without any major interactions.

They aren't no this is true. But, they are a large source of damage and if you aren't keeping them on sic all the time, they are very interactive and give more robust command usage.

As for this whole desire to neuter smn and make their pets the primary source of their damage... Oy. Given how wonderfully the pet control system works (ask schs... really they'll tell you a lot) and what that whole pet only thing did to smn in FF11, no thanks. Not again, glad I'm not a complete slave to a difficult to control/limiting mechanic like that.

Summoner is a royal screwup on SEs part - everyone knows this.

Way too much emphasis on DoTs rather than the pet. That's what you get when you try to copy-paste WoW.


Summoner personal DPS should be lowered, but give them more ON THE GCD pet commands (including some with utility) that reduce the amount of ruin spam filler they need to do. Increase the dps and utility of the pet to compensate for SMN personal dps loss.

....and it's been said a million times before, but EGIs are complete trash and disappointment when summons have always been on a grand scale for the entire series. I'm not saying give them full size FFXI summons, but some kind of halfway point with a little more detail and effort on the artistic side would be nice.


None of this is going to happen though, it's the same vicious cycle that every other declining game franchise faces -

1.) Make rushed, unpolished, incomplete game

2.) Game has horrible sales or dies fairly quickly

3.) Instead of fixing the root problem, game company tries to copy other successful franchises or discontinues game franchise altogether



Game development is about a quick buck nowadays. Don't expect and significant improvements or overhauls of SMN gameplay or any other aspect of FFXIV.
