Why do you need to make money off a fanfiction?
Fanfiction isnt meant to be a real publication- it's story telling practice for would be authors.

Just upload the story on FF.net and call it a day (and send a link when you upload it :3 )

all in all if you release your fanfic without making money SE should be fine with your fanfic its usually when you make money off their ideas they can sue due to copyright and trademark, the chocobo's for example if i wrote a story and said it had a chocobo i would be infringing both copyright (on the chocobo) and the trademark (the chocobo shape) that SE own which in order to protect themselves would tell me to stop even tho i would be a nobody if they let nobodies dodge though the radar making money soon bigger companies will steal there idea using us as the reason for it

however if you do it for free for the sole purpose of entertainment, enjoyment, or parody it falls under the fair use act which protects fan art which is why SE cannot use fan art of ff14 as advertisement legally

its a sticky mess to get into once you involve money because big companies will think "how will other big companies use this against me" without money its "this is fan art"

Fun fact: one of the newer pysdo sci-fi flicks ( I cant remember the name, its like hunger games but not, girly future world) is a movie that was based off the author's Harry Potter fanfictions. She isn't being sued and is making millions off her junky writing. If she can do it, you can do it. I say go for it.

Making money off of the intellectual property of others is a violation of copyright laws, punishable by prison time and hefty fines in some cases. Fanfic is a bit of a gray area. Most people tolerate it if the writer is not making money off of their ideas, though it is still, technically, illegal as well. My suggestion, if you want to sell it on amazon, would be to take your fanfic, and remove every reference to anything owned by someone else, and replace it with a world of your own making. That way you CAN sell it, because it is YOUR creation.

Isn't a fanfiction not also a creation of the writer? At least with the story.

I love the setting of Eorzea but I would also like to sell the story, which puts me in quite a bind. I doubt Square will allow me to use their property. So... I guess I'll make everything from scratch. The world/game, characters, etc... I've always wanted to make an MMO but the most accessible way of doing so is writing.
