Dark Knight: Damage Dealer or Tank?

as far as I remember, the DK cecil just had a sword, and the shield came when he became a paladin during the story

The opposite. Dark Knight Cecil always wielded both a sword and shield, and you couldn't obtain two-handed weapons(specifically the Avenger Sword, which also turned you berserk) until after you became a Paladin.

Actually, first lore was FF2, where Leon was equipped with both a sword and an axe. But Cecil's still the most iconic face for the Job.

Damage Dealer. An hp spending monstrosity with cooldowns to leech life back to keep things rolling. It could work pretty well. Make it like a MNK, where they have a 3 or 4 hit combo and a selection of abilities to use for each hit. Let them weave their own combos with varying hp costs depending on the order of skills they choose. It could be pretty complex and fun.

A high hp, life draining tank already exists. Another one would be redundant.

If its built off a new class tank. If its built off of Marauder or Gladiator DPS. No class needs two of the same role

It's normally not a very good idea for a tank class be draining it's hp to do damage and that is the signature trait of final fantasy's dark knight. So DD is the only one that makes sense.
