I'd really hate to see some overly engineered system. It'd be nice to have the whole gambit of options, leather to cloth, cloth to plate, or armor to nude. Why can't my monk wear a robe or be shirtless?

Seriously, though, I don't get the restriction-happy people. If we go by the class restrictions we already have, we will have tanks and melee fighters in bikinis, subligars and silken cloth and doing fine while being pummeled by Hard/Extreme Mode Ifrit's hellfire fists, yet an arcanist who wants to wear the custom-made shirt or even look like they care about protecting themselves in tanking armor, will be denied. Which is pretty bad.

And unrestricted Vanity would be a good incentive to level many classes for class-specific gear, even you have no interest in certain classes, which would be in the supposed selling point spirit of the game; One Character, All Classes. (And if they put in a few pretty Tank/Healing accessories in level 30-50 dungeons, those DPS queue times might shrink a bit.)
