Why would an MMO game designer add content that requires an entire FC to really work together, saving and donating money, for a long period of time, to achieve a difficult to obtain reward (which is really just a perk and a sort of 'status' symbol)? He should really just give it away so everyone could get one, get bored in a week or two, then come back and complain about how there is nothing to do.

    Now look.
If something should be motivating players and I as game designer announce and hype that feature, telling people how cool it will be and how crafters, gatherers and fighters can build houses and fill it with furniture and trophies, and then set the prerequisites to do all the cool stuff so high that only a fraction of players can enjoy it, I missed my goal.

Talynia's post contains the perfect description how housing should work.
The plot of land is the basic requirement for the whole content.
If this requirement is too hard to get, the whole content based on it can't be enjoyed.

And don't come up with the argument that it is good that plots of land are so expensive because it gives you a goal to work towards.
It's nothing but a good opportunity for RMTs and a massive grind.
First SE tries to get rid of grinding by making leveling all classes easy and fast, then they implement this monstrosity?

It's not hard to get gil, it just takes forever. It's not an achievement to get loads of money.
Defeating a hard boss is a goal, creating great weapons, gear and furniture is a goal, providing materials for your company to build all the stuff is a goal.
Mining 25.000.000 items to sell to an NPC to earn enough money for a plot of land is nothing but a giant grind.

Also, when looking at server economy, they should subtract the gil owned by RMTs and farming bots.
Oh sry, I forgot SE doesn't care about botting and hacking.

EDIT: Well, there is always the chance that gil rewards for leves and stuff will get incresed by 1000%...right, right?
