    PvP

This is a post that will probably get a lot of hate from fans of FFXI and haters of WoW, and it's in this section because I didn't know where else to put it. Also, I have yet to see any topics on it as well. Now to the chase ...

I, along with countless other hardcore MMORPGers, would like to see some kind of PvP in FFXIV. FFXI tried it with Ballista, and that was a good start, but FFXIV is a new-age game and thus its PvP system, if implemented, should be new-age as well. I have a few ideas in mind for it as well.

First of all, world PvP is a bad idea! I agree with tons of people that it's annoying as heck to do quests and have a random PKer come up and kill you. If there is any PvP, it should be controlled in arenas, such as in Ul'dah's coliseum, or in some specified open world area where people know PKing is possible. Another idea that I've seen in many other MMOs would be to have a hostile or passive mode for PKing, so only those in PK mode can fight each other, while someone in PK mode cannot kill a passive character.

Open world dueling is great. Being able to duel in a place like the area right outside of Limsa Lominsa with your buddies or any other player willing to show their skills against you is wonderful. It would beat having to wait a time limit to battle with other people. Party dueling, which I've yet to see in any other MMO, would be a nice addition as well.

PvP quests and achievements would be great. Maybe a quest would be to duel a player on your friend list and win? Or something to do with arenas? And to boost the equipment system, design gear that gives benefits specific to PvP, such as resilience to magic or certain kinds of weapons. And create weapons that fight resilience, but of course cannot outdo the resilience of armor, otherwise obtaining that gear would be useless.

I should've stated this before, but my belief in a PvP system comes from gear competitiveness. To me, it's not enough to obtain armor just to kill some monster that's too big for his own good or to better my performance in a party. I want to be able to put the gear to real use in an aspect of the game that could never grow old, because unlike NPCs with their AI systems built in, people learn and evolve, making two fights with the same person completely different.

All right, there's my 2 cents. I hope to see plenty of comments about this, be it positivity or negativity, so that the devs can decide for themselves what they want for the game.

PVP is great, and I also like WoW in it's own way, it manages to pull off pvp well, BUT pvp and Final Fantasy do not belong together and I wish people would stop bringing this up, the designers have alot more to worry about than implementing pvp into FFXIV....

Can't agree with what you are proposing though I enjoy PvP much more than PvE.

I don't see any real meaningful PvP system that can be put in place to appease enough, attract enough, and not scare many away.

A duel option wouldn't be bad(but there needs to be a way to auto-decline duel challenges so you don't get the qq'ers spam dueling ya).

Open world PVP is not gonna happen. They already said they're not gonna do it.

In light of that, we should have other forms of inter-player competition.

    Triple Triad, for one.

Just like in FF8 where you can run around and challenge NPCs. Also let me learn "Monster Card" so I can farm cards.

Let me put an icon above my head that says I want to take on all challengers.

Let anyone who wants to observe a match in progress.

Let there be two types of PvP matches just like in online mode in Street Fighter 4: Normal Match: which is like a friendly game, and Ranked Match, which lets people battle for rank points.

Create a server wide leaderboard to see who is the best card master

    Hold tournaments for cool prizes.

Let participants of matches bet (items, gil, cards, etc) over the outcome of the match.

Put in a whole crapload of cards, and watch the OCD playerbase swarm in.

Keep the rules SIMPLE yet allow for high level play. Triple Triad was good at this. Tetra Master was a clusterfark of confusing hexadecimel letters and numbers.

This would add in solo content, as well as PvP content at the same time, give people more things to do, and add loads of entertainment value to this game.

Part of the excitement would be to venture out to the boonies and find NPC who have rare cards and try to beat them.

    100k new subscriptions guaranteed.

My problem with pvp is balancing out the classes. Tanaka had some moves with pvp in mind and they were completely /hax like punishing barbs or even emulate in a pvp situation would be broken. Balancing between pvp and pve sucks, even in instaned pvp. I could see a brenner/ballista happening probably for a mere "i'm better lets duke it"

can we just have the pvp card game idea?
-better cards=trade in for gear or something

As a fan of FFXI and someone who dislikes WoW, I'm 100% for PvP. I was really big on ballista in XI and going against a living, thinking human being who can adapt to different situations is MUCH more fun and challenging than facing some dumb AI.

"Uh oh, he's going for the healer, better voke it off!" "Oh no the mob is at 50% HP get ready for its super AoE attack guys!"

A real player will silence your spell cast on reaction or bait you into wasting TP. Stuff like that is why I love competitive games. With that being said, it should definitely be in a controlled environment like ballista/battlegrounds/WAR PvP/etc. No open world. Duels I could care less about, team PvP is where it's at.

Card games are cute, but they don't replace straight up PvP. I don't think I'll ever understand why the FF community is so against PvP. Afraid of a real challenge?

I want PvP, but I do not want them to mess with anything with PvE...

If a PvE ability is too strong for PvP, it needs to be modified only in PvP and they need to leave it the same in PvE.

That is one of the biggest problems in other mmos they put PvP over PvE and it should never happen in my opinion.

My sentiments concerning PvP are close to those already expressed in the thread. There's a time and a place for standard PVP, but I don't think that FFXIV is that time or place. Leave that variety of PVP for games designed with it in mind (such as Aion, which I adore).

However, I do agree with Rentalhamster (which is a rare occassion!) that a card or strategy game based PVP system would be wonderful. Something like Triple Triad, as already mentioned, or better yet, give the current Parley system some actual depth and progression mechanics and allow players to Parley with one another while putting items up like you do with the NPC (ie, both players put up items and/or gil, and winner takes all).

Well I'm a little surprised about the posts. Many want some kind of PvP system, and it seems others could care less long as it doesn't mess with their gaming experience. I do know, after finding some other posts that briefly cover this, that there will be no open world PvP. Good! I hate it anyway. The posts set about some kind of player competition but no combat PvP are good ideas. Card games are fun, and the idea someone had in another post about Chocobo racing kind of like Grand Turismo and Need for Speed sounded cool, instead of in XI where I guess it was simulated (never raced in XI), and how in VII it depended on the better Chocobo and not skill. Thing about that would be it'd take too much to have that kind of Chocobo racing I would think.

We all know that SE has some smart people working on the FF games. I've noticed it playing VII through XI, and even XIII regardless of how much people thought it was crap (didn't care much for XII honestly, just because something didn't set right with me on it). I'm sure that they'll be able to come up with something that will bring about a strong competitiveness between players, because that's honestly what any real gamer is looking for, and the lack of that is why it took years (8 or 9 years, I don't remember for sure) for FFXI to reach 2 million subscribers, when WoW had 10 million within 5 years or so, with all of them being in an American region, and FFXI crossed four different languages. Come on, SE, you're a better company than Blizzard. Show us all something that will put them in their place!
