In the interest of actually saying something useful instead of acting like a dumbass, I'll field this one. The slot that you see is a guaranteed meld. Every piece of meldable gear can take 5 materia, but melding them without slots (forbidden melding) carries risks of failure that grow the more materia you try to meld in to it after you run out of slots. On a single slot item, you'll be looking at an 8% success rate by the time to get to the fifth piece of materia.OK, so I was looking at the Astral Ring, and it only showed 1 materia slot. Where are people getting 5 slots? I agree with 5 slots it would be a much better choice than Darklight.

When the world was young, the Sun bestowed upon me his crown; always will I light your darkest hour.

To complete Mithras' post, the higher the rank/grade of the materia when attempting a forbidden meld, the higher the chance of failure. Because everyone enjoys blowing up their bank to be the very best.![]()
OK, thanks for the help in understanding how the crafted rings work. However, I still think the materials for this are very overcostly, 2250 Philo tomes is 22.5 WP runs. For 1 ring! They need to dramatically lower that, SE is crazy to have it how it is now.

pay the cost to be the boss! funny thing is that's just the overall cost for getting the ring made for you after its made you will spend even more gil getting the materia and melds on it (most of said materia will be wasted) so just be ready to see your character shaking their head in failure ALOT (this of course being if you are the one doing the melds and not paying another to do them)
tbh the DL ring will do you just fine until you move to hero's or allagan but if you got the funds GO WILD!![]()

You have seen that guy by the retainer bell pissing 5 and 6 Quick Tongue III in to the wind to get them to stick? Now you know. When you get down on one knee to overmeld a crafted item, you better have a stack of materia for it. Further in you go, the bigger the stack. It ends at 11% and in FF14 that means you will want 30+ materia.OK, so I was looking at the Astral Ring, and it only showed 1 materia slot. Where are people getting 5 slots? I agree with 5 slots it would be a much better choice than Darklight.

For a 1 slot item (e.g. Astral Ring), using grade III materia, it ends at 7% xDYou have seen that guy by the retainer bell pissing 5 and 6 Quick Tongue III in to the wind to get them to stick? Another point that no one has really touched on. Beecause there are people who have way the hell to much gil that would much rather buy the ring, drop 3mil in Materia melding it to a 5melded ring that will have as good or reasonably good stats as an i90. Saves them time a heck of a lot of time and they're ready for coil day1 at 50.
I know plenty of people that have a full set of 2star crafted and melded and ding 50 and walk right into coil with better gear than people who have been farming Philo/Myth gear for a month.
Wait till 2.1, SE probably will decrease the cost of all the crafting recipes to 9 philosophy items

They will. A JP Dev confirmed it on the JP forums. It's the reason why I'm waiting untill 2.1 to make a full astral set (though I'm farming tomes for the rose gold earring as we speak)
