I could have sworn this is not the first time they have mentioned this. But I agree they probably need to make this clearer. An ingame help text or something that plainly says: "Doing this has a lasting effect, you will not be able to change again for 30 days" or something like that. If they want to keep immersion, you could be like: "Hey, Adventurer, We are glad you are joining The Maelstrom, but just know you are going to make your current GC very mad at you. I don't think they are going to even be willing to talk to you again for another 30 days. Are you sure you want to join?"
First off, you are fighting for everyone. They make this a very "we want everyone to get along" kind of game. So I doubt they would ever add the option. The even explain in the story, something along the lines of, you are choosing a company to help defend their respective lands, and it is a mutually beneficial relationship. It isn't just about the "items" you can get from them, there is actual story things happening by you being part of that GC. So even if you are trying to argue this from an RP standpoint, it falls apart. Because it just wouldn't happen. The Waking Sands guys wanted you to join one of their ranks, so if you were going to listen to them at all, then you would do as you were told... if you were going to go all renegade on them, then, well, you wouldn't listen to them at all with even simple things like, go kill Ifrit, go protect these people... So thus, you would have died off at around level 20. Great for RP! But congrats on being stuck at 20.
When you unlock the ability to change grand companies, they actually encourage you to go and try out other ones. But once you change, they punish you for it.
It's like handing a cupcake to a little kid, and as they go to take a bite you smush it in their face.

So just to be perfectly clear, if I were to decide to change Grand Companies, my rank and everything would be preserved were I to decide to go back? I just lose the ability to represent the company I left? Cause, as someone said, I am planning on torturing myself to try and finish every Grand Company. Maybe not every achievement, but I'd like to at least max rank them all, so I could have potential access to all their items.
Four and a half years of playing every single day and having unlocked and using every single gathering class.
Edit: Or having unlocked every gathering class and buying the stuff every day to turn it in.

I was just wondering about it. I reached the Lieutenant level, and I have 50K already, losing the new ones in FATEs. Bought the minion, Chocobo gear and a couple of things for crafting experience. Should I switch? Or can I still get promoted? I don't understand because when buying stuff there are actually six slots for the grades, with the second three grayed out.
I'd imagine in the future they will add new ranks and higher tier items that we can buy, perhaps new barding, consumables etc. I don't believe they have mentioned anything for 2.1, but if you're not willing to risk it I'd say just wait.I was just wondering about it. I myself have been going through each GC. I get Lieutenant, buy the bardings and pet, and then cap my seals before moving on to the next one.
