Considering Devs stated that relics are now a joke (since about half the 50's have them), I'm not surprised they made the only hard content left in the game produce a weapon that's a higher ilevel.

Relic is each jobs signature weapon, that does not mean they need to be the best and given how easy they have made this game in regards to obtaining them they are far from unique anymore. If people still want to keep the look they will always be able to use it as vanity once it's released, I'm in no way a fan of continuously upgrading the same boring weapon over and over, the same goes for relic armor/af2 whatever you want to call it. In short, relic or any weapon/armor for that matter will never dissapear thanks to the vanity addition, and thanks to that we don't have this bland game where we are constantly upgrading the same weapon/armor over and over(in regards to relic/af2).While I believe it is right that Allagan should be more power, due to the difficulty to obtain, I do not believe SE would let the relic disappear, afterall, they are the "signature weapon of your class".
My wild guess would be they will make quests that let you upgrade your relic further so there is always a way to keep it almost on par with current highest raid tier weapons. That is just my guess though.
Hello, everyone!
We double checked with Yoshi-P and what he mentioned during the stream is correct. Only Allagan weapons will have their item levels increased to 95. Sorry about the confusion!

I will not be able to find the quote because it's from a long while ago, but the progression as was envisioned was this: Relic weaponry is intended to be viable high level weaponry, but it will not be stronger than what can be dropped from the hardest difficulty content in the game. When there is a level cap increase, there will be some way to further upgrade the relics.
Edit: Ok so I un-lazied myself and found out two source locations for my statements:
http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/t...804-17-2013%29 you can find the relevant Q/A at the 14:31 time-stamp, talking about the strength of [Coil] items (weapons in context) versus the advanced weaponry that had existed already in 1.0 being primal and relic weapons
And then at the Japan Expo: http://ffxiv.jeuxonline.info/article...the-japan-expo the Q/A near the picture of the lalafell leaping into the air talking about future upgrades to relic weapons as the level cap is increased, a desire to prevent the invalidation of the iconic weapons through expansion of the game[0:14:31]
Q: Compared to primal weapons and relic weapons, how strong are you planning to make the weapons from Crystal Tower and the Great Labyrinth of Bahamut?
A: *Art of new rewards are shown in the video.
Since there were so many weapon drops from primals in 1.0 we tried hard to make some armor as well. That's not to say that they will come from primals, but we've worked hard to make full sets of gear for various fights.
For weapons, the strongest items will be those dropped from the Great Labyrinth of Bahamut, and we have a created a clear path for progression through content and gear. When you're level 50 you can clear a scenario and go after a good primal weapon. Once you have that, you can challenge the Crystal Tower, and get items from there. After that, challenge the Great Labyrinth of Bahamut. The difficulty of content and the strength of items will follow this order, going up and up. Both primal weapons and relics will have their own place in this hierarchy, and primal weapons are not at the top.
These two blurbs openly state both the intention for Coil items to be the strongest following the "harder content = better leutz" philosophy, and that they do not intend for relics to become obsolete. It's also implied that relics are not intended to be better than the Coil items (I swear it was actually stated openly that relics are not intended to be exactly BiS just very close to it, but I can't find the proof) which I think is valid to infer given the wording of the Q/A and that currently it is at least true for some Jobs (ymmv, but I know that the SMN Coil book is better than the relic), not to mention that with the 2.1 update and an increase in ilevel for Coil weaponry that distinction will become a little clearer.JOL : About the relic weapons, we didn't hear about them for a while. Let's say, one day, you raise the level cap, and then weapons will become useless. Will they be upgradable?
Yoshida : [himself, in English] Yes. *laughs*
Especially because we ask players to go through such a huge challenge to get the weapons, so we don't want to introduce something new and make your efforts go away. We will definitely have an update, it really is a special item.

Thank you for clarifying that for us Camate. This is awesome news and it gives even more incentive to take down Twintania.
No shield means I'm still using Stardust Rod +1, so no sweat off my back. :3
It is a good move.
