I don't want to offend you, but I'm not telling you what you want. I'm telling you what most people want.

The representation of players that want "fun, meaningless content" is about like the representation of MMOs that don't focus on combat. Just the same as there are players that like the questing more than the fighting. TSW tried to cater to that group, and it's dead or nearly so.

You could make a WW2 game where you never picked up a rifle or touched a tank, you went to the factory, and took in junk metal for recycling and some people would play it. However most people want war in a war game. This is a combat game, it is.

Also, you say that you believe the mmo community has the maturity to support a sandbox game and simultaneously attack anyone that disagrees with you on this, ranging in degree. Not because of your demeanor, but in general, I don't think the community has the maturity anymore. I've watched it devolve over the past decade, and I've certainly lost some of that too. No longer do I stare with wonder at the big dragon, I just want the fight to function properly and drop appropriate loot.

    Says who? That's an assumption.

Anyhow, in the grand scheme of things it's all 'fun, meaningless content' right? Yep, quests, story, pvp and dungeons should ALWAYS make up the general body of a game, but that's not all there is. What do you do when you're bored or need a break from the grind? Simple, you log off. What do developers want you to do? Stay logged in. It's about other ways to spend your time once you're done questing for the day, otherwise it can become monotonous.

By the way; I'm casual, and I want content too. Do you think the casuals enjoy doing the same thing everytime we log on, just because we don't have time to log on as much as hardcores? Just because it takes us more time to run through content, doesn't mean we don't feel the lack of variety too. We're the same as you guys.

Personally, the one thing that pulls down ARR for me so far, is that whole feeling that all of the game is there just to be a support pillar for the dungeons and coil. No exploration, no sense of adventure, no mini-games on the side... although I do think (and hope) this is coming with later patches.

I'd say the real life world is probably shaped in such a way that you can do those card games, chocobo breeding etc. offline while taking a break from FFXIV.

It is a very ridiculous mindset to believe a MMORPG should be able to host all types of games every person on the planet wants to play so they can log in and never leave.

On the topic of open world, it also seems like a very minor difference to instances.

    1. You can swap around party members with other FC people during fight.
    2. You can have people watching you do it, if they like seeing it outside youtube.
    3. Possibly a chance for grief with claim mechanics.

2 and 3 isn't really needed in FFXIV, so open world only offers one difference. And that is kicking people and getting others in to optimize battles. I.e. making fights easier than instances.

I am content, and I would contend that being content doesn't need content if you are content to accept the content presented in context.

this game failed the moment it wasnt a real open world and just a bunch of small instanced areas, damn if this was a one big world to explore this game would have faired a lot better, has it currently stands i cant see this type of game catter to a big player base.... the moment it was mostly focused on pve it ditched 50% of the players out there that like mmo's, when it was made obvious it wasnt a real open world mmo another huge chunk of the players out there didnt even felt like trying it, and now that most players are reaching lv.50 there isnt enough content to keep them occupied, or its just to damn repetitive and boring to do ...

im guessing only around 30-40% of the current playerbase will stay with the game half year from now...

I guess you missed live letter IX?
And Golden Saucer (full with mini-games and a card game) is still planned.

Hmm, are the mini-games in Golden Saucer for free or would they cost Gil?

Golden Saucer had been mentioned for 2.3, not 2.2. It might make it into 2.2 if they can finish the development of more mini-games in a shorter time-frame window. They won't release GS without 3 full mini-games they said.
