A shield does not actually inhibit the use of a bow in real life. And there were even some Shields built specifically to have a bow fascend to the shield itself to help brace the bow. It ends up making the users arm look like a crossbow.

I have to thank Square-Enix for the amazing job they have done recreating Final Fantasy XIV from Scratch. Especially the inclusion of Missing Genders which we petitioned for in good faith. This was proof to us players that the Developers are truly Sympathetic to our requests and that being honest and vocal can pay off with the amazing characters we have who are Female Roegadyn, Male Miqote, and Female Highlanders. Thank You SE, Thank You Community Team, Thank You Yoshi-P.
Which is fine, but raising your shield to guard position will prevent you from firing arrows. So you can wear the shield and not use it, or you can use it and lock out your archer abilities which you're counting on to generate hate and pin the enemy down.
The way I'd balance it is
With Guard Up > Archer Skills take 10% more time to perform. And have a chance of breaking guard permanently.

Cairdeas i'm pretty sure I've seen you stated many times that the game lack's stuff that is FF related So why do you want archers to be tanks now? That's like saying i am a Sniper who fights on the front line makes no sense at all.
Firon. the last 10 posts of mine in this thread have not been about Final Fantasy specifically. But how I feel a decent MMO could work.
I want to see a decent MMO come out where you can pick any role and any weapon mix and match them and the Role Defines what you do in combat and the Weapon defines how you perform that task.
Sorry for the confusion.

Reading comprehension is totally helpful when debating on forums.Dude you just said 1 to 1.. So that means only that class IE: PUG can use those abilities. Didn't you read the article that they want classes to become JOBS with the new actions. So why the hell would they let other classes use them?? That would be the same crap we have now.
People are not getting what SE is doing and it is so simple. Re-read the article about the JOB system then re-read it 5 more times untill you understand it.
"Jobs are unlocked 1-to-1" is not the same as "jobs are locked 1-to-1."
The first means only one class unlocks a specific job, the second means only one class can equip a specific job.

Decreased effectiveness of ARC skills when using a shield seems like a fine compromise to me. You trade damage for tanking -- it's a trade-off you'd have to make that currently barely exists in the game. This is the part that doesn't make sense ( and unfortunately is currently permitted ). Archers traditionally don't wear heavy armor because it interferes with their movements, making them less effective as archers. And the Paladin's trademark as a tanking role is not so much the sword as it is the shield. How does an archer use a shield?
If an archer's going to tank, it should be an evasion tank role.

Yeah.
Archer. > If wearing Shield Archer Range and Damage are decreased.

Was it not mentioned recently that there would only be 1 job per class, i forgot where i saw it, maybe it was the Q&A but i really doubt that SE is gonna give archers shield or conj and thm a axe. The whole reason the job system is getting added is to limit classes and their roles in pt, unlocking all jobs to all classes is doing the opposite.
Jobs are Not Classes though. From what they said They get their own skills that only they can use to help perform the role they are designed to do. If thats the case then it means things like white mage getting benediction, a healing potency + trait, and some other stat bonuses. And if thats the case your class doesn't really matter to your role except for how you do damage in a fight. And if they give AOE spells like Curaga, Firaga, to the jobs themselves then you don't even need to have a magic class equipped to do AOE casting in special circumstances. Was it not mentioned recently that there would only be 1 job per class, i forgot where i saw it, maybe it was the Q&A but i really doubt that SE is gonna give archers shield or conj and thm a axe.
