It's still happening nowadays. True, abyssea has been favourite places to grind some xps. But Adoulin kinda forces you to also cap you skills too. Hence now I would still find players around old worlds skilling. And there's that new Monstrosity content too. When Final Fantasy 11 first came out in the USA it was not uncommon to see groups of players fighting all over the place. There were hot spots of course. But the world still seemed alive with other players working together as a team to kill monsters.
My comments are meant to reflect the pre-Abyssea days. Final Fantasy 11 has dramatically changed over the years... and leveling up is nothing like it used to be. And I believe people moved to Abyssea because it was just more efficient. I don't think it had anything to do with the fact they didn't care about the open world.
And I am not "obsessed". I just miss the old days when there was an incentive to exploring the world of an MMORPG and leveling up as a group, rather just soloing everything with a few instances on the side.
Was this question asked?
One thing that I used to tell people who never played ffxi was about how its endgame content didn't grow cold. The level cap was at 75 forever and that made all end came content relevant. Sky was basically the first end game content and people were still farming drops from it during wings of the goddess expansion because the gear was still useful. You could have a decked out character with pieces from all the end game content. Think of all the other MMORPGS out there…soon as the expansion came out…all old content became obsolete. The new content became all there was to do now for nothing else mattered. I really hope that ff14 does what XI did and keep all end game relevant so there will always be variety.

Here's hoping that somehow Yoshi learns about XI's content during 75 cap pre-abyssea era and takes that into account when designing the game further.
