Going by his current track record excluding The Last Story which I haven't played yet, I think it's safe to assume that Sakaguchi leaving SE was probably the best thing to happen to Final Fantasy.

He had a big budget, he made Spirits Within which while not terrible, it could hardly be called a Final Fantasy and couldn't pull in the big bucks. Considering that some of what made it into Spirits Within was part of his original plan for FFVII, I think we dodged a massive bullet.

People say Lost Odyssey's story is great. He didn't actually have anything to do with any of the novellas, arguably the best parts of an otherwise very bland story, which were written by Kiyoshi Shigematsu, or the music, which as we all know was done by Uematsu.

Some people get all the credit, even if it's Sakaguchi he didn't deserve all the praise he got for it.

Haha I love how everyone come back to Spirits within when you mention Sakaguchi, you do realise just like FFXIV that the higher ups are to blame, its basically SE passing the buck, Spirits Within almost destroyed Square and that's why they merged with Enix, but it was Wada's fault for putting so much money in one project.

Say what you will about Lost Odyssey's story it was 10 times better than FF13's.

Totally agree with this, after 10 the series went down hill fast, FF11 was good enough though.

It's all subjective because people who dislike FFXIII yet liked VII failed to realize FFVII was as linear as it was in terms of story, it only had the illusion you had freedom, it wasn't till (surprise) the middle/end of the game you had absolute freedom to complete anything you wanted beyond main storyline.
Sorry but only FFVII had the illusion of Freedom?
It really seem to be a new trend to hate FFVII.

The only FF i really didnt like was FFXII, i just didnt like the Characters, Gameplay wasnt interesting for me.
FFX-2 was really good Gameplay-wise but i didnt like the Story nor the Characters.

And there are many other RPGs who are at least as good as FF titles, one of them is Shadow Hearts except 3, i havent played this one so i cant tell.
Atlus Games are really good too.

If I could get another big budget FF title with a battle system similar to Lost Odyssey (traditional turn based with a unique spin), a real overworld, and an actual vehicle to travel around said overworld near the end of the game...i'd be just fine.

Spirits Within didn't cause Square to merge with Enix. The merger had been in planning for a while and SW performance actually caused Enix to delay and reconsider the merger.

Replying to a fan question in May 2010, David Hoffman, director of business development at the American branch of Square Enix, mentioned Fortress without confirming its existence, stating "I have and had no involvement in the rumored project Fortress".[11]
Sounds like its bullshit to me. SE tends to register game titles years before the games released. They do not have Final Fantasy Fortress Registered.

I have to thank Square-Enix for the amazing job they have done recreating Final Fantasy XIV from Scratch. Especially the inclusion of Missing Genders which we petitioned for in good faith. This was proof to us players that the Developers are truly Sympathetic to our requests and that being honest and vocal can pay off with the amazing characters we have who are Female Roegadyn, Male Miqote, and Female Highlanders. Thank You SE, Thank You Community Team, Thank You Yoshi-P.

I'll reserve my judgement until I hear both sides of this story.

Fortress was a codename. S-E never trademarked Rapture (what this game was called before it was called FFXIV) either.
