But then again, we wouldn't be able to see other people camping... :/ Which would be kind of nice, seeing other people out on adventure.
Yes, I agree. The best thing would perhaps be to be able to camp anywhere outside cities, but for a certain cost (ex. specific materials nedded, like twigs for bonfires etc.). And the tents could be a bit smaller, like one-man tents, even if they were to house several players.
In any case, I would really want us to be able to actually enter that tent. Although obviously only our own tent, not those who belong to people outside our group.
Yeah, instancing seems a bit odd.. frankly I'd think it simply better to balance the costs and make it possible to share other people's camps (although honestly, if you couldn't share the whole idea would be a bit redundant anyway).

I might be able to agree, although I'm slightly sceptical. It's like when you're out camping, you don't want others to bust the party and enter your private tent. But then again, most of us play for the very reason of playing together with others. I should think one could decide wether to make the camp open for others or not, when you put it up. How's that?
i disagree somewhat with that. I think instances could be a decent thing. but say everyone gets dumped in the same place, like a big camp site. Like people said, have the odd encounter with bandits or area specific bad guys, kinda like the boats in XI. you could cower inside tents marked as safe zones for safety or go outside and kick some ass
I love this idea, like so many have said; it opens up many opportunities for you or your party to get a leve type scenarios of many types good and bad. and adds a thing of realism and as far as cottages that last maybe a week real time you have to keep protected somehow like a enemy appear if are in the general area of the cottage at random.
The thing is getting the balance so that resting in the tent doesnt punish the party for wanting a 10-30 minute break from sp/xping without making it mandatory before starting a adventure. The way i imagine it is you get a signet/sigil like effect that gives you increased stats and sp/xp gain determined by how long you spent resting capped off at a certain amount of time. The increase wouldnt be enough to bridge the gap of sp/xp lost through resting but then if you add facilities into the camp to help players restock and replenish their gear it might be atleast be desireable enough to take a break every now and then.
Also if this sort of thing is implemented would be nice for a minigame that players can play with each other rather than just the npcs =) like.... say tetra master.
