Hi Marishi. Pardon if I don't really roll well with technicalities but I will try my best to reply.
My connection is hard lined. I tried leaving it overnight since the update is taking so long but only to find an error message saying I have lost connection with the server. There wasn't anything running other than the update and I have tried to re-plug my modem and thought it worked for a bit, before going back to status quo.

Mine is a PC version, Windows 7 and I'm behind the windows firewall. Internet speed is about 100mbps.

Thanks for the info! Below, I have compiled your information. Unfortunately, it's still difficult to ascertain what the issue is. I've created a pseudo checklist blow that I normally use to troubleshoot issues with network connectivity (my job demands it):

    What's known:
    Hardlined/Wireless - Hardlined
    Patch IP - Unknown
    tracert path - Unknown
    Make/Model of router/modem - Unknown
Power Cycle - Performed (functionality returned for a small amount of time)
    DNS Flush - Not Performed
    ISP Name/ISP Speed Uplink/Downlink - Unknown 100mbps/Unknown
Flucuation In Speed High/Low - Unknown
    Platform - PC
    OS - Win 7
Location - Unknown (US, EU, AU)
    Firewall - Windows Defender
    Things of note - Unknown

Can you reply to this thread with the same format to the unknowns? Right now, the only thing that I can see is when you rebooted your modem you picked up in speed for a bit. The may indicate an issue with your modem (they do go bad) or an issue with your ISP (they may be throttling as packets from FFXIV are seen as a P2P client on the back end). Here are a few things to try:

To find the IP of the patch client open the client and download the patch. Go to your Task Manager and click on the Performance tab. In that tab click on the Resource Monitor. When the Monitor opens, click on the network tab and click on the TCP connections. Record the remote IP address that your patch client displays.

Close out of the Task Manager/Resource Monitor and open up Command Prompt type:

    tracert <patch IP address>

When complete, copy the information and then type:

    pathping <patch IP address>

    Also copy this information.

The goal is to look for any Asterisks/high latency/dropped packets. When in doubt, post it in this thread and I'll look at it.

    With Command Prompt open type:

    ipconfig /release
    hit enter
    ipconfig /renew
    hit enter
    ipconfig /flushdns

Also contact your ISP and make sure they are not throttling you, no known issues on their end, and request they release your connection and refresh it.

    Thanks!
