Question about Market Board, RMT, and fake gil

Hi, Im new to the forums so go easy on me. Anyway, straight to business.

There's a lot of players out there going against Enix's rule of RMT'ing. I heard a story that some player who WASN'T RMT'ing had over 100million gil for using the market board. Enix suspended the account. It turned out that most people who bought that player's items was using fake or hacked gil, or possibly was involved in RMT'ing. The guy with over 100million gil was found innocent of course, but when he got his account back Enix deleted any gil that RMT's used to buy his products. In the end he had only 10million gil left....

My question is when selling stuff on the market board how are you able tell wither or not someone who RMT'd bought your items on the board with fake gil? I don't want to be falsely accused or anything, and it's stories like the one above that made me stop using the market boards. It's all quite unsettling...

Your not, and in my opinion SE took a terrible approach to this. If they were going to penalize the crafter by reducing his gill they should have removed the gear from the buyer and returned it. Unfortunately it is obvious that squares concern was to make sure the Gil was removed from the economy.

I have been buying and selling since launch and have had no problems. However I am not loaded by anymeans but i'm not letting it bother me. I will continue to sell and I think most will as well. You cannot tell if they guy you are selling to has bought gil so there is no sense worrying about it.

    Terrible perhaps, but necessary.
They have to remove the gil in some way to bring the economy back to normal and no one will return it voluntarily even if it is possible. A few unhappy people is much preferable over an entire server of unhappy people due to inflated prices.

Sucks to be the penalized crafter but if you sell items for unrealistic prices, you can expect the gil source to be illegitimate unless you are on a legacy server.

For the most part, you should be pretty safe if you don't sell 2-star crafted items.

This about sums it up. Obviously play the market boards based on supply and demand, but don't try to sell the product at 2-3 times the cost and expect a legitimate player to purchase it.

I don't see this being a problem now that we are past the opportunity of being the first weaver, botanist, etc (insert random DoH/DoL). After all, it was those individuals that set the initial prices and determined the price based on the demand, which was likely too much for the average person.

I believe they took back the gil from the guy because there was no way to determine if that was the method of gil transfer for a RMT transfer.

Well, if it was, then I couldn't care less. The guy griefed the server and threw a tantrum, camping the DD FATE after that. I really have no sympathy for a crybaby that throws fits and griefs innocent players because he got his panties in a twist.

I know he claims he wasn't involved in RMT activities... but don't they all?

This ^. I do think the "story" sounds a bit fishy, nor do I personally think that would be SE's response if everything else was in order. I haven't heard of it happening to anyone else. Surely there can't have only been 1 player selling goods to RMTs - or if there was, it's definitely not legit!

The person mentioned who had 100m gil and lost 90% of it... That's almost certainly part of something that happened a while back: SE suspended seemingly all accounts with more than around 8 or 10mil. When those people got their accounts back, their gil had been reduced to 1/10th. Your person there was not the only one. SE has only done this once, so far. "Found innocent" is probably not correct: more likely SE never fully figured it out. Just everyone who had too much gil at the time lost 90% of it.

Your concerns about being falsely accused are certainly valid, and that's why SE's previous action was poorly done. And it's also why that happening again is not very likely I think: it would be bad for the game as a whole.
