    Samurai would most likely come from Lancer. As in Japanese history, entry level infantry were lancers, then became Samurai. It would make sense too since Samurai attacks are very balanced and precise. Contrary to popular belief, samurais ended battles within 2-3 strokes of a sword. It was never a flurry of a fight, chinese sword on the other hand ..yes. Also for if they take anything from past games I believe SAM will be a mid range melee with magic like FF:Tactics. IMHO

    I would assume SAM = Lancer30/GLD15 with a level 50 WAR. NIN = introduce Thief as a class; THF30/ARC15 with a level 50 DRG.

    Since Samurai are known for Katanas and the grip accommodates 2 hands and is a sword you can't have it come from Lancer and no swords in Gladiator are 2 handed.

    I do agree though that either Thief or Rogue be introduced as a class with Ninja as a Job or Rogue as class and Thief and Ninja as the jobs.

    The thing about Final Fantasy is they don't have to stick exactly to the same constructs in previous games as long as it makes sense in the current game world. Since they draw elements from previous titles they can use the same ideas and still make them unique to XIV

    This is not true on any level.
    Not to derail but

    1) Samurai was a social class you were born into, not something you became. Most were allowed to learn Kenjutsu, though you rank have (and hence placement in any army) depended on the land your family owned and the rigid hierarchy the samurai all belonged to. Many samurai knew how to use their swords, at least, as a matter of honor.

    2) If you mean specifically Japanese infantry and referring to samurai as the swordsmen in the armies (which bugs me), then you're still wrong. Samurai were taught all forms of combat to some degree, joined a school which suited them and then specialize. There was no "entry" level positions, in fact the whole Japanese class system had little understanding of upward mobility at all.

    3) Spears, by and large, were phased out by at least 11th-12th century in Japan in favor of the bow. Before that, usage of the spear was given to NON-SAMURAI when they needed peasants to assist in a war. You would not be made a samurai by doing this.

    Its legacy was Naginata, which is a mix between the sword and spear. This was not an infantry unit, they was mounted. It was an extremely hard weapon to use and it was a very specialized field. You had to be very skilled to wield the Naginata and very high ranked to get a horse.
    And again, the naginata is not even a normal lance. I would say it's more sword than lance since it was used in slashing motions rather than piercing.

    So history doesn't really support SAM being based in LNC.
    And as Cyan said, the weapon matters anyway. You don't use a different weapon for your job than your class so I don't see it happening.
    They may change that, but if they do LNC certainly won't be the choice.

    Lancer -> Samurai
    Can still use lancer/spear as main weapon, sub Archer. This fits with the Samurai thematicly.

    Pugilist -> Ninja
    Uses claw weapons dualweilded, add some kind of ninjutsu magic and perhaps 1.0 stances, sub Thaumaturgy.

    Gladiator -> Thief
    Uses dagger and short swords with bucklers, add treasure drop and back attack - emnity abilities, sub Archer.

    I'm just going to go out on a limb here and say that most people that want Samurai want it to use a Katana. So going back to what I stated earlier Samurai can not come from Lancer.

    They would either have to add 2 handed swords to Gladiator arsenal or come up with a new class that uses 2 handed swords.

    Thief could come from Gladiator, but considering that Gladiator gets a lot of enmity skills and Jobs share skills with their class I doubt this would happen, so thief would either become a base Class for new jobs or will be a Job from a new Class.
