Don't worry even if one is being announced now it won't be out for atleast 2 years. This game is getting bigger and more people are starting to play and the content is just starting to roll out, this game will be every bit as successful as FFXI was. FFXI had a pretty rough start at the beginning too and took awhile for it to build some momentum.

Is SE creating something like FEZ to create a second pillar of income like they state or could this be the backup plan because they know FFIV is going to sink.

Yea exactly, because of the backlash FFXIV got on September of last year Square Enix paniced and started working on another MMO and they're probably releasing it next week or so because they feel FFXIV has failed and they are just $@#!ing with everyone and no one is actually working on FFXIV anymore; basically they have kept the servers running to justify the price people paid for the game and the servers will now be shut down or switched to the new MMO. Exactly this, there is no other explanation for this and only smart people like you and me TC can come to this conclusion.

honestly if any other company had released a flop like XIV at the very least that MMO would be scraped. at the very worst that company would go out of business. I honestly think SE should focus on one MMO. they're stretching themselves too thin

It's not even that they're stretching themselves thin, they just don't have the resources to go around to begin with apparently - I mean think about it, they honestly released an MMORPG in the year 2010 without a mail system. The astounding lack of foresight that that characterizes is going to bite them in the arse twice-over now if they honestly try to support two new MMOs.

I'm really hoping I'm wrong here but nobody can know until the updates start hitting.

I've pretty much given up on XIV. I still follow the updates to see if they turn it around.
