If XIV wasn't playing so safe and have absolutely nothing different from other very old MMO's....then I wouldn't complain.
I wish 1.0 wasn't a bust and was pretty much what XIV is. We'd be 2 + years in and have tons of stuff going for us.

The things I want in a game in addition to raiding is PvP.
Watch out when you say "we" because I really don't know who you're speaking for?

Ragnarok Online was one hell of a sandbox!I actually like the Idea.
I wish there was an mmorpg mixed of .hack/SAO/Yureka/Half Prince/Log Horizon ._.
I also like the "old school" game Ragnarok Online, that had nice stuff, that is never rly seen again cuz everything copies from WoW
Just wanted to say ~ i dont blame SE or so tho x:
PS: in RO there were no instanced dungeons how you know it, first ever instaced stuff i saw was in aion, so it was really weird for me that time
I miss it so much. The game was simple and graphically unimpressive, but unique and complex.
I remember how easy it was to make friends there. Leveling with people was better and more enjoyable, so everyone tried to get a group and a guild.
We need more sandbox elements in FFXIV.
Who wouldn't? Sadly every dev still wants to emulate wow and get its numbers and do the same boring kind of mmo already done for years. (which doesnt work anymore) Its kinda funny too if you think of it. Animes like the one you are talking about being popular in japan and yet we still cant seem to get a very open rich mmo like that.
Funny stuff. Oh well..

There is open world mmorpgs that are kind of like that (as much as we can with modern technology.) Take a look at mortal online or darkfall. Here's the problem part of what makes anime charming is how everyone gets into it and "roleplays." not many people are into roleplay. In open world mmorpgs you have people killing each other for little reason other than we can. In open world games like that such as mortal/darkfall people murder each other left and right. It happens to such a degree that can't trust anyone. The game is essentially a giant death match. You have people that kill people that have no value, tea bagging, talking trash, and even roaming around open towns in giant packs killing everyone in sight. There's no heroes. There's no people trying to really set up "kingdoms." nothing to that effect whatsoever.Who wouldn't? In short stories about mmorpgs in worlds like that are interesting but in practice open world mmo's are a niche game that's mostly for sandbox pvp diehards.
To be fair those games end up being pvp fests because they are sold as such. This includes mortal online, not just darkfall. While they are on the right track the problem is they have shot themselves in the foot already by screaming thats its a pvp game or just touting pvp battles via videos... I guarantee you if they have a bit more pve elements in them such as.. oh say a dragon attacking a city, you would have a bit more cooperation.
Its all about design and focus really, if one is to have said open world game, one has to have the reasons and systems in the game to fight, build, socialize, what have you.... not just the option to fight each other.
It will come someday... hopefully with EQN... but i wont hold my breath.

The problem that stops us from having games that reflect experiences such as portrayed in SAO and .Hack is one of what computers are actually capable of. At the moment, the very smartest AIs are about as smart as a mouse. A retarded mouse, at that. So games can only do what computers are good at... crunching numbers and showing pretty pictures (which, by the way, is a function of crunching large numbers quickly). In a game, we can only do what the developer of the game has anticipated that we might want to do.
If you want a true role-play experience, get a half-dozen friends together around a table and play Dungeons and Dragons or Pathfinder. It doesn't have the flashy graphics that Final Fantasy X|V has, but it will allow you to do anything you and your game master can imagine together.
If you can't find a role play group in your area, well... stand by. I expect Final Fantasy XIX will be closer to what you're looking for.
