My big question is, is that if FFXI was so great, why isn't -everyone- clamoring for more XI and things like it? The most reasonable answer, just because you* had a blast in the game and were able to find a clique, does not mean that the game was good or that it's community was great.
For the most part, i remember XI being the most vile and elitist community there was; When you tried to find a group, only certain classes were even entertained as being worth it, then when you found a group you were dressed down as soon as you got there and people didn't want to risk their XP on someone who didn't have every piece of gear people thought they should have for the level, no matter how unreasonable it was, and then you were booted from the group to find your own way back to civilization.
And my experience does not mean it was a horrible game either, but rather simply pointing out that nostalgia colours a person's view in many different hues, but rarely does it reflect the truth.

If FFXI came out today with modern graphics, it would have way more players than it did when it was previously released. And I'd be one of those players.
*Everyone* isn't. But most people are. If you look at the threads involving praising FFXI and asking to implement FFXI style systems, the amount of likes on comments here in the forum are heavily on the side of the people who support FFXI.My big question is, is that if FFXI was so great, why isn't -everyone- clamoring for more XI and things like it? First-love-syndrome.
FF11 was my second favorite after StarWars Galaxies PreNGE. As much as I love FF11 and the community back then, it was a game for a different time. It that game is released now, I probably won't have the time to play it.
FFXI's system had people split up into different level groups throughout the majority of its life. So whether you started the game 3 years from launch or you are leveling a new job, there were always people in your level range, cos the whole leveling process was long and there were meaningful things you could do between levels.
With FFXIV, the low level zones are so unpopulated right now on legacy servers, cos everyone's at 50 already. Very few people actually go out and level several classes; most just stick to one. I wonder how new players are gonna cope with no one to do fates/dungeons/storyline together. Imagine someone starting 3 years into the game's life. I'm sure he/she will find it very barren and difficult to find parties for stuff to progress. Even for FATES, without a significant number of people spamming at the same time, is actually slow exp.
I'll gladly take an upgraded HD version of FFXI (of course with everything fresh) than FFXIV. Not saying I dun like FFXIV, but I would jus prefer the other.

It would have more players than it does NOW, true. However I believe it would only ever draw in current XI players and a FEW of the refugees who can't seem to let it go. Let's also realize that if they ever released an "updated" XI, it would be as it is now, which most XI purist consider to be "ruined".

Just the way FFXI was design really. Everything in the game required you to seek help and then there's that thing call force grouping.
Oh and my fc mate said "And a lot of WoW players"

And to all those supports him, I present you:I think because most of the players back then were old players they had something called patience, i remember my first party to valkrum dunes was fun even though we died alot of times from gobs and linking, no off us got mad at other players if they sucked at healing or had bad dps gear and most of the time we laughed at how tarutaru die facing the ground and galkas tea bagging them it was all about having fun
