Almost all the crafter classes do this, though, when I leveled leatherworker, i had to pay 80k a piece for the materias, and i didnt hine! I earned 2 million selling Hippo leather instead :P

This^^^. I dropped over 40K to complete the Alch 50 quest. Good thing I made a ton of money getting to 50 Alch. Made swallowing that pill much easier

It does seem like a bit much, but they are handing you the best main tool for completion. I've done that quest iteration something like 3 or 4 times and it always hurts but the reward is very much worth the price.
