What was Square trying to accomplish with the previous tome patch?

Before Patch:

Best place for Myth: AK.

Best place for Philos: Prae/CM. (Depending on gear etc.)

After Patch:

Best place for Myth: WP.

Best place for Philos: WP. (Regardless of gear.)


Was this their master plan to finally deal with the AK overflow that usually occurs on a Monday? I just don't understand what they were planning on accomplish with the previous patch.

I think you more or less answered your own question at least on one hand. Certain dungeons were being over populated and on the other hand it was to give people more options to stop them getting bored doing AK over and over i suppose and also to make it easier for new 50's to start collecting tomes.

The difference is, before patch AK was the ONLY place for myth. And now which one is the best really depends on each player, since every player has different completion time for those dungeons so WP may not be the best for some of them.

Call me crazy, but I like to switch it up once in a while. Maybe it takes slightly longer to do an ideal AK run rather than an ideal WP run, but I just get SO BORED doing the SAME dungeon over and over again. After I cap my myth for the week, I like to jump into a few Praetoriums for good measure (farming more philos for my bard).

By the way, in the official translation of the Live Letter, it was revealed that there would be some sort of daily or weekly quests. Perhaps this will be another option for myth/philo. I'm particularly excited about that because I've been suggesting it all along. Perhaps the quest could require you to do certain dungeons in order to get a 'bonus'. That would be nice.

AK still gives more Tomes overall so if you have that dungeon down and have a good turnover time for it there really isn't much reason to go to WP.

The only downside of the changes to WP is that now i hardly get people stuck on the second boss XD. I used to get 3 of those runs in an hour back to back and now they get hoovered up so it's like 1 run like that maybe every 2-3 hours.

WP is faster myths per hour, at any gear level. Even if you speedrun AK, it'll take usually 25-30 minutes. 20 minutes at best.
WP takes ~15 minutes, 10 minutes at best. That makes AK take twice as long to do, but doesn't give twice the reward.

I like how the patch effectively destroyed any market there was for relic mats and weapons. Mats going for about 100g now.

Not really sure how these two are related??? unless you mean materia farming which used to be best accomplished in WP... but I mean, more people are hitting 50 and more are going to be going for their relics. I don't really see how it destroyed anything... what "new" weapon was released that replaces your relic?

He/she meant the market for the materials for the relic precursor weapons, which drop in WP. They used to sell for a decent amount, and now on my server some of them are selling for less than the vendor price on the market boards.

The base materials used to create relic weapons drop from chests in WP. Since no one used to run the dungeon very often, there was a market for those drops. Now that everyone and their dog runs the dungeon, the market for those items has collapsed.
